The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed ambient water quality criteria at part-per-quadrillion levels and released a biosolids risk assessment that indicates human health risks at a 1 ppb level (consistent with background in soils). These low values are based on the toxicity values currently being used by the EPA, which continue to evolve. Currently, the cancer potency for Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is the second highest in the Regional Screening Level (RSL) database (second only to dioxin). The non-cancer reference dose for Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is the second lowest in the RSL database (also second only to dioxin). Note that in risk assessments, more toxic chemicals are indicated by higher cancer potencies and lower non-cancer reference doses.
