And now in nautical news ⚓ Introducing Skipper! This incredibly social snack bandit was part of a family of raccoon kits discovered on a boat earlier this year, and after being raised briefly as a pet, was brought to the San Diego Humane Society's animal rehabilitation center, Project Wildlife. Soon after attempting to teach his fellow raccoons to befriend the wildlife care specialists, it was determined that Skipper ultimately couldn’t be returned to the wild due to his habituation to people. The Project Wildlife team then worked with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance to give him a new home with expert care at the San Diego Zoo’s Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp. We are so honored each and every day to get to work alongside partners to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife like Skipper. 🦝

For more than 20 years, ʻalalā, also known as the Hawaiian crow, have been extinct in the wild. Today, we’re honored to share that alongside our conservation partners in Hawaiʻi, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has successfully introduced 5 ʻalalā into the forests on Maui. 🐦⬛ These incredible birds are more than just part of Hawaiʻi’s biodiversity, where they play a crucial role in restoring native forests—they’re deeply woven into Hawaiian culture as ancestral guardians, known as ʻaumākua. This introduction is representative of what can be achieved through collaborative conservation, and serves as a powerful step toward a brighter future for ecosystems and communities. Exceptionally proud to share that the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, for the first time, sent a delegation to the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity #COP16.   COP16 brings together nearly 200 countries under the theme Peace with Nature, continuing the work to safeguard biodiversity, including the nearly one million species at risk of extinction. The conference focuses on advancing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.   Our very own Vice President of Conservation Science, Megan Owen, will be part of an important side event panel discussing the critical role of zoos, aquariums, and botanic gardens in global conservation efforts. It’s Veterinary Technician week, and we’re honored to recognize the extraordinary dedication of our exceptional RVTs in delivering the highest standards of wildlife healthcare. 🩺Our vet techs truly wear an incredible amount of hats: acting as nurses, anesthesiologists, imaging technicians, phlebotomists, dental hygienists, laboratory specialists, surgical assistants, and so much more for wildlife at every stage of life. 🩺In addition to mastering this diversity of expertise, our RVTs are also highly versatile, with the capacity to apply this expertise to over 700 different species at the Zoo, and over 300 different species at the Safari Park. 🩺These teams have an immeasurable impact on the well-being of their patients, and these efforts extend to support healthy wildlife populations being cared for at accredited zoos, aquariums, and across native ranges worldwide.
