Commercial Interior Design and Retail Engineering focused on boutique retail industries.
So for the last 5, almost six years I have been designing and custom building the interiors of #cannabis #dispensaries. I love working with my clients in the initial phases of retail engineering. This is really the magic which gives life to the rest of the design process. In many ways this is consulting with them to come up with the best floor plan to ensure long term functionality.The experience and homework I have done gives me knowledge in security and product handling compliance as well as a variety of sales display techniques, ADA compliance and fundamental architectural rules. I like to get right into the nitty gritty of the business model including merchandising, SKU count, product focus and vendor rental space which I utilize in the display designs and floor plan layout. I take all this data as well as measurements of the physical space and create a scale 3D model in CAD software which allows us to look at the layout and details before we even start building. Prior to this venture of commercial interior design and retail engineering I did not have much experience in cabinet making but I am a very auto-didactic fast learner and I had a great shop to work with in the beginning to help me along. What has really come to the forefront for me is just how many layers of design necessity are involved. OK, its not that hard to design a box and some shelves. BUT, now design them for manufacturing via CNC. Fine thats not so hard... Ok Ok, gotta make sure that the assembly process can be done by a moderately skilled human, hmmm... Ok got that. Now, not only do these need to be engineered wisely but it needs to be either flat pack delivered to the job site or, some sub-assemblies designed in so that the final product is not a giant monstrosity that would be impossible to get into a retail space with a foyer or worse.. stairs... Whew.. Oh yeah, the cool part... What textures are we going to use? Gloss white display units with Walnut accents, a big mural and a fuzzy wall for everyone to touch before they leave. "organic marketing" ;) I believe that I have got a pretty good handle on this. Of course I have had a few screw ups, but I have always come through for my clients either repairing or just plain updating a product. That is the integrity I work really hard to stand behind. I do really love what I do. I get to make cool stuff that ideally makes life better for everyone who comes in contact with it. Not so bad!! If you read this far, THANK YOU. One of my favorite conferences every year !!! I want to thank The Upper Deck Company for hosting such a informative and fun conference for their Certified Diamond Dealers. This is a group of collectible business owners from around the world who spend a few days learning how to improve their business. My presentation this year was on “Tradeshow Security” and “Store Emergency Planning”. With the recent fires in California, it was a perfect time to discuss how to design a store safety and emergency plan. I also got to meet Sumo Joe, Will Reeve (Christoper Reeve’s son), Satnam Singh to name a few and then have dinner with one of my winning Florida cannabis license winners.
