  • “Partnership is not a legal contract between two equal individuals. It's an emotional alliance between two people who are committed to each other's success.” – Warren Buffett   Jan. 27, 2022, was the day that initiated our relationship with Hyundai Motor Group, and wow, we have accomplished quite a lot since then! We are thankful that a prospect meeting three years ago has blossomed into a flourishing community-wide relationship. And it’s true – this partnership goes well beyond a legal contract and represents friendship, respect and hope for the future. Cheers to many more!

  • Settlement agreement reached between  Ogeechee Riverkeeper and Savannah JDA   On Friday, December 27, 2024, the Ogeechee Riverkeeper (ORK) agreed to dismiss its challenge to the groundwater withdrawal permits issued to Bryan and Bulloch counties on October 7, 2024, after reaching a settlement agreement with the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority (Savannah JDA).   Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, the Savannah JDA agreed to facilitate a reduction in a long-term surface water or alternative water solution for the Bryan County Industrial Megasite and associated developments from 25 years to 15 years and to provide for additional water quality sampling from the permitted groundwater wells.   The Ogeechee Riverkeeper and the Savannah JDA remain committed to being responsible stewards of the region’s natural resources while ensuring industrial water needs are met to sustain southeast Georgia’s dynamic economic development climate.   “The Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority will continue to bring better opportunities to those that live in the Savannah region. This includes well-paying jobs and preserving the natural resources that make our region such a wonderful place to live,” said Trip Tollison, Savannah Economic Development Authority President and CEO and Savannah JDA Secretary/Treasurer.   “This Agreement demonstrates that environmental protection and smart growth are not mutually exclusive,” said ORK Executive Director and Riverkeeper Damon Mullis. “Indeed, this Agreement is a critical first step in ensuring safe and secure water supplies for people, agriculture and industry. Specifically, the shortened timeline and increased monitoring are important first steps in responsible management of our pristine aquifer and prioritizing drinking water and agricultural needs. ORK will continue to work with all regional stakeholders on responsible long range regional water planning.”

  • Thank you José Muñoz and Hyundai Motor Group for hosting the Savannah region delegation last week in Seoul, South Korea. It was a great week of learning, productive meetings and cementing relationships. We are honored that Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) chose to call the Savanah region home.

President and CEO, Hyundai Motor Company

We had very productive meetings with leaders from Southeast Georgia this week in Korea.   Thank you to the group of mayors, city managers and economic development leaders for taking the time to see Hyundai’s operations in Seoul and spending time discussing developments at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) site.   As HMGMA continues to ramp up hiring and production and more suppliers locate to the region, the opportunities in your constituencies will grow exponentially.   All of us at Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) are appreciative of the partnership with you and your communities.    HMGMA is more than a production site. It’s a campus for the future of mobility. Together with our partners, we are investing $12.6 billion in HMGMA and two battery joint ventures. This investment will create tens of thousands of high-paying jobs for the people in your communities and generate billions in economic impact every year. The support from Southeast Georgia has been key to our success and remains an essential part of the HMGMA story which is only beginning.   We look forward to decades of fruitful partnership.   Thank you to:  Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II; Savannah City Manager Joseph A. Melder; Pembroke Mayor Tiffany McCoy Zeigler; Pembroke City Manager Christopher Benson; Pooler Mayor Karen Williams; Pooler City Manager Heath Lloyd; Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar; Trip Tollison; Angela Hendrix; Eric Johnson, FAIA; Bryan County Board of Commissioners Chairman Carter Infinger; Bryan County Development Authority CEO Ryan Purvis; Jason Coley; Alyce Thornhill; Jacob Lee and Jiyeon Kim. • Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), in cooperation with Glovis America, announced it has deployed Hyundai XCIENT heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell electric trucks for clean logistics operations. Initially, a total of 21 XCIENT trucks will be in operation.   “At HMGMA, we are committed to creating sustainable transportation solutions,” said Oscar Kwon, HMGMA CEO. “Our Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel-cell trucks that support the Metaplant release zero emissions and offer a cleaner alternative to the traditional freight logistics methods used at other manufacturing facilities.”   This industry-leading initiative represents a significant step forward in HMGMA’s leadership efforts to both reduce its carbon footprint and actively promote sustainable practices in daily logistics operations. The use of zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell technology will demonstrate Hyundai Motor Group’s ongoing commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.   These Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel-cell Class 8 heavy-duty trucks will transport vehicle parts from HMGMA suppliers across the region to the Megasite on a daily basis. During the initial rollout, XCIENT trucks will transport parts between suppliers and the on-site Consolidation Center and later these logistics will expand to a broader network of suppliers. The 21 XCIENT vehicles will represent more than one-third of the Glovis America truck fleet at HMGMA.   Earlier this year at CES, Hyundai Motor Group announced HTWO, its new hydrogen value chain business brand. HTWO encompasses the Group’s businesses and affiliates, enabling each stage of the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transportation and utilization. HTWO represents ‘Hydrogen’ and ‘Humanity,’ the two main pillars of Hyundai’s hydrogen business.    “HMGMA’s deployment of XCIENT for logistics and operations is one of the main initiatives of HTWO,” said Jim Park, SVP, commercial vehicle and hydrogen business development, Hyundai Motor North America. “This is delivering on our strategy and vision to showcase a closed-loop hydrogen logistics ecosystem and improve the environmental sustainability of manufacturing operations.”   HTWO Logistics, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Company and Glovis America, will also install a mobile hydrogen refueling station at the Megasite for efficient refueling. A hydrogen production and refueling station is being developed for the Megasite and will be announced at a later date.
