Accelerating Sustainable Finance in Emerging Markets
About us
The Sustainable Banking and Finance Network (SBFN) — formerly the Sustainable Banking Network — is a community of financial sector regulators, central banks, ministries of finance, ministries of environment, and industry associations from emerging markets committed to advancing sustainable finance for national development priorities, financial market deepening, and stability. As of September 2024, SBFN is comprised of 96 institutions representing 72 countries and US$68 trillion (92 percent) of the total banking assets in emerging markets. SBFN members are committed to moving their financial sectors towards sustainability, with the twin goals of (i) improved risk management of factors by financial institutions (FIs) — including management and disclosure of climate risks, and (ii) increased capital flows to activities with positive environmental and social impact, including climate change mitigation and adaptation. IFC is SBFN’s Secretariat and knowledge partner, assisting members to share knowledge and access capacity building to support the design and implementation of national sustainable finance initiatives. The Sustainable Banking and Finance Network is supported by the Facility for Investment Climate Advisory Services (FIAS). FIAS supports World Bank Group projects that foster open, productive, and competitive markets and unlock sustainable private investment in business sectors that contribute to growth and poverty reduction. Supported by nearly 20 Development Partner countries and donor institution, co-financed by the Bank Group, and managed and implemented by IFC, FIAS is one of the oldest and largest multi-donor trust funds in the World Bank Group.

The Azərbaycan Respublikasının Mərkəzi Bankı / Central Bank of the Republic of Azerbaijan (CBAR), a proud SBFN member, has approved its Green Taxonomy—a guiding framework designed to help banks and financial institutions channel capital into green finance. This milestone was achieved under an initiative led by CBAR with the support of global experts from international groups, including the Sustainable Banking and Finance Network (SBFN) and IFC - International Finance Corporation. The #GreenTaxonomy will play a pivotal role in building a sustainable financial ecosystem in #Azerbaijan. It will direct internal and external resources toward green and sustainable projects, regulate risks linked to climate change, capitalize on opportunities from the transition to a low-carbon economy, and support enterprises specializing in the export of green goods and services. CBAR’s achievement aligns closely with the SBFN Toolkit on Sustainable Finance Taxonomies, which provides a practical, step-by-step approach to developing and implementing national and regional taxonomies, drawing from SBFN members’ experiences and international best practices. 🌿 With #COP29 just around the corner, Rong Zhang, the Global Coordinator for the Sustainable Banking and Finance Network (SBFN) and Lead of ESG Networks and Thought Leadership at IFC - International Finance Corporation, joined global climate leaders at Friends of Europe’s Annual Meeting held in Brussels this week. The session "𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘜𝘱: 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘌𝘳𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱" was a pivotal opportunity to exchange insights with high-level stakeholders, including Frank Elderson, Executive Board Member of the European Central Bank and first Chair of the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS); Dr Sinead Walsh, Climate Director at Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland; and Diana Urge-Vorsatz, IPCC Vice-Chair and Professor at Central European University. The session was expertly moderated by Dharmendra Kanani, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Spokesperson at Friends of Europe. In her remarks, Rong focused on the vital role of the financial sector in driving global climate leadership, highlighting the need for collective action to address three key gaps in climate finance: ☑ Bridging the Policy Gap – Supporting policy alignment to enable market action. ☑ Bridging the Capacity Gap – Promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building to improve policy implementation and effectiveness. ☑ Bridging the Measurement Gap – Building consensus on frameworks to drive measurable change. Europe, in collaboration with multilateral organizations like IFC, The World Bank, and the United Nations, has a unique opportunity to lead on climate finance by uniting stakeholders across sectors and geographies. Together, these efforts can bridge gaps and advance impactful solutions for both developed and developing nations. IFC Climate & Sustainability #StateOfEU
