  • You shouldn’t have to choose between growing your family and advancing your career. No one knows that more than Income Tax Audit Supervisor Mayra Folmer. “I used to work in the private sector, but when I started planning to have a family, I knew it was time for a change,” she says. “I was looking for a job that would give me the flexibility and time to enjoy my family, and the SCDOR allowed me to do that.” Mayra joined our team as an Income Tax Auditor in 2020 and has continued to grow her career and enjoy time with her family. With the help of SCDOR’s tuition assistance program, she completed a Master’s degree in Taxation and was recently promoted to her current supervisory role, where she looks forward to supporting other employees in their career development. We’re proud to have leaders like Mayra on our team, who share our dedication to work-life balance and career success. 👏 #EmployeeSpotlight #WorkLifeBalance #CareerGrowth #TaxAdmin

  • SCDOR Solutions Engineer Allison Korba likes a challenge. That’s what drew her to pursue a career in technology—a path that’s taken her from serving our country to serving our state. “I was always interested in figuring out how things worked,” she recalls. “I didn’t know much about the ins and outs of technology, but I knew it was a field that would always be changing so there would always be a chance for me to grow.” And she was right. Over the course of her career, she’s served in both the Navy and the Army, using radio technology to protect troops in combat. She’s worked in the private sector and the public sector, helping South Carolina harness its technology to drive our state forward. Her advice to other women who are interested in tech? “Don’t be afraid to break things. Get your hands dirty, take things apart, and then let’s learn how to fix it.” #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience #WomenInSTEM #TechCareers

  • Income Tax Manager Ron Rhames comes from a family of public servants, but it wasn’t until completing LeadSC that he realized the full impact of his work at the SCDOR. His supervisor at the SCDOR encouraged him to enroll in the Department of Admin’s program for emerging leaders who are early in their state careers. “LeadSC opened my eyes to just how collaborative state government really is,” he says. “Each person brings different knowledge and skills, and we really need every piece of the puzzle in order for our state to work.” In his current role, Ron leads a team of about 20 employees who process tax returns, approve refunds, and fight tax fraud. This allows him to support others on their career journeys and work on projects that have a direct benefit for taxpayers—like making MyDORWAY, our online tax portal, more functional. But there’s an even bigger benefit than the individuals he’s able to help. “I feel like I’ve been passed a baton, and I’ve realized there’s no greater service I can do for myself, and for my state.”
