The demand for electricity is increasing. Southern California Edison (SCE)’s president and CEO Steven Powell talks with our engineers about how we’re expanding existing grid capacity to meet increasing demand while we also build more transmission lines. Watch the latest ONE w/Steve now.
With more EVs on the road, more homes using heat pumps and induction stoves, and more businesses converting diesel equipment to electric technologies, electricity use is growing like we haven’t seen at any point over the last two decades. That means we’ll need more power. Transmission lines play a major role in getting that power to where it’s needed. However, building new lines is costly and it can take a decade or more to plan, permit and construct. So, Southern California Edison (SCE) is using advanced transmission and grid enhancing technologies (GETs) to maximize what we have while we continue to expand the system. Some of those advanced conductors are at the historic Laguna Bell Substation in Commerce, California, where I talked with SCE engineers Shuying Zhen and Blake Wheatley about how our teams are modernizing old infrastructure to deliver more electricity in the near term. They also explain that there’s a limit to what the existing system can do even with enhancements, so we’ll still need to build new transmission lines to meet growing demand. Advanced transmission and GETs offer faster, more affordable solutions now while providing a bridge to the future. #cleanenergy #innovation #technology #energy #renewableenergy #electricity #infrastructure

In honor of Veterans Day, we’re sharing a touching story of resiliency, strength and friendship. Meet Steve Nunez and Derek Harp, two Southern California Edison employees who crossed paths decades after forming a lifelong bond as National Guard members in combat. Nunez never imagined that the medic (Harp) who saved him after an explosive attack 20 years ago would become his coworker. Learn how their military experience equipped them with valuable knowledge in emergency management, a skill they use at SCE as they coordinate emergency response plans and train team members on incident management. https://lnkd.in/gHRJ9BMM

We’re modernizing the electric grid with 5G📶. That’s right. Instead of powering smartphones, our new state-of-the-art wireless Field Area Network is powering our electric grid, helping make it more secure, reliable and ready to meet the needs of the clean energy future. We hosted the Great ShakeOut at our Emergency Operations Center in Irwindale with the Earthquake Country Alliance. This event brought together various agencies and other partners to remind people that earthquakes are a fact of life in Southern California, and we all need to do our part to prepare. SCE’s seismic grid retrofit program helps keep the power flowing during major earthquakes and we continue our work to retrofit our buildings. https://lnkd.in/g3gH_iYq #ShakeOut #EarthquakePreparedness
