Green Steel Stainless+: Designed for stainless applications, this solution utilizes at least 95% recycled materials. By avoiding primary alloys, we reduce emissions from purchased materials by approximately 90%.

This October, Miguel Solis, Assistant Manager & Safety – Operations at Swiss Steel USA/Canada, achieved a significant milestone by completing the Chicago Marathon. But this achievement went beyond personal goals – Miguel also ran for a worthy cause: raising funds to support cancer patients.   The Chicago Marathon provides a powerful platform every year, where runners from around the world come together for charitable causes. Nearly 50,000 participants from over 100 countries took part, supported by hundreds of thousands of spectators along the route. We made a significant investment in the modernization of our Sorel production facility in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. The modernization includes replacing the current 5,000-ton press with a state-of-the-art 6,700-ton press and transitioning from a natural gas-powered forging furnace to an energy-efficient electric furnace. These innovations will enhance productivity, improve product quality, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. “We are committed to being a world leader in forged tool steel by continuously improving our quality, productivity, and capacity,” said Frank Koch, CEO of SSG. “This project is a critical step in securing our operations in Quebec for the future while also contributing to global decarbonization efforts.” The investment was partially supported by both the Canadian and Quebec governments, highlighting the importance of this initiative for the regional industry and the global environmental strategy. The 6,700-ton press not only increases processing capabilities but also reduces material waste thanks to its precision. In one of our last posts, we talked about our valuable source material - scrap steel. To transform the input material into high-quality output requires large amounts of energy. Our main energy sources are electrical energy and natural gas. Electrical energy is mainly consumed by our electric arc furnaces, whereas natural gas is primarily used for the generation of process heat in our rolling mill and our forging and heat treatment furnaces. Wherever possible, we use the heat contained in waste gas in heat exchangers such as regenerators. We also use waste heat to reduce our own natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions for heating. The rolling mill in Emmenbrücke, Switzerland, and the heat treatment shop in Ugine, France, also feed part of their waste heat into district heating networks.
