We hope you all had a wonderful and warm break as we closed out 2024 and re-energized for 2025! As part of our first full week back, we joined school leaders, elected officials, and philanthropies at a breakfast this morning to learn more about Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education ‘s strategic plan. We share the vision and are aligned in the work across many of our strategic levers, including: 🌟 Literacy 🌟 Early Education 🌟 Real World Learning 🌟 Family and Community Engagement We enjoyed sharing in informative dialogue with our peers on how Missouri can move the needle for students in our state. We look forward to engaging in the work to cement Kansas City as the model for community commitment to student success in our region! An education based non-profit working to eliminate the achievement gap for public school students in Kansas City.
About us
SchoolSmartKC (SSKC) is an education based non-profit organization founded in 2017; our organization has been partnering with public schools within the boundaries of the Kansas City Public School (KCPS) district to serve the city’s most historically disadvantaged students since its inception. In the five years since our inception, SSKC has committed over $32 million in funding into these public schools, both district and charter schools, and the organizations that support their students. SchoolSmartKC’s goal is to close the achievement gap for Kansas City students and aims to see Kansas City schools performing at or above national and state averages within ten years. The SSKC approach uses a robust, data-driven model to identify where disparities and inequities exist and where opportunities are present to see significant improvement. The organization then makes strategic investments to improve school quality and provide tangible solutions to meet student needs.

Our Chief Program Officer, Dr. Robin Henderson shared her expertise alongside other leaders as they explored critical aspects of Kansas City’s K-12 education landscape. Topics included school funding, the business of education, and strategies for collaborative partnerships to tackle key challenges in the sector. This impactful dialogue highlighted the collective efforts needed to create meaningful change for the students of Kansas City. #OurCity #OurStudents #OurFuture

Today the SchoolSmartKC team explored our own city with a visit to the Kansas City Museum. Lottie gave us a personal tour, and a group favorite was seeing the original mirror ball from El Torreón Ballroom! We appreciated the opportunity to learn more about our community and our city, and finished the morning with a team lunch and gift exchange! #kansascity #explore #kcmo #teambuilding #ourcity

Last night SSKC recognized the work of our Pre-K Cooperative teachers with a special teacher celebration before the holidays. We had 40 educators in attendance who reflected on the first semester of the school year, ate good food and drank, and received prizes and gifts. No one left empty-handed! This is our opportunity to let our educators know that they are seen and loved. They work hard everyday teaching our youngest learners and it is our job to provide opportunities to lift them up and celebrate the valuable work they do. #prek #happyholidays #seasonsgreetings #education #kansascity

Last Thursday marked the beginning of an exciting journey as we hosted our first Advisory Council meeting for the Literacy for All Students (LFAS) initiative! This group, made up of parents, community leaders, educators, principals, and superintendents, came together to help shape the future of early literacy in Kansas City. Our mission: To improve literacy rates for K-3 students across the Kansas City Public Education System (KCPES). We are excited to work alongside these dedicated individuals as we take the first steps in transforming the future of our students. Together, we are making a lasting impact! 🌟 #LiteracyForAllStudents #Forourstudents #Ourstudents #Ourcity #Ourfuture #literacy #reading #Kansascity #education #KCPublicSchools

Powerful video from SchoolSmartKC’s partner Conscious Discipline on the importance of teaching self-regulation in the earliest years of a child’s life. Teachers in our Pre-K Cooperative sites are gaining valuable skills through coaching and professional development in Conscious Discipline. We believe it’s some of the most important work we do. We recognize that all children, regardless of race, economic status, or culture enter classrooms with issues that may have nothing to do with academics - and they probably haven’t received the skills in how to handle such big emotions. It’s even more critical for our littlest learners, who don’t have the language skills or words to describe what they are feeling or know why. It may be revealed in hitting or throwing chairs. We are proud to provide this training to our educators and look forward to continuing in the future.
Join us for a look at DJ Batiste's Elevate Conference keynote, "It All Starts with Composure! Composure Changed My Life!" During this clip, you'll hear a powerful story about how the "pause button" of self-regulation made a difference in DJ's life and how it can make that same difference in the children you teach, no matter their age.
