Can a net-zero economy drive economic growth, job creation, and innovation? This report from CBI (Confederation of British Industry) shows the UK’s strides towards net-zero have already provided substantial benefits. The report, titled “The Future is Green: The economic opportunities brought by the UK’s net-zero economy” found: 1) The net-zero economy has grown by 10.1% since 2023, becoming a major economic force. 2) In 2024, 22,800 net-zero businesses contributed £28.8 billion to the UK economy. 3) These businesses support 273,000 full-time jobs, surpassing employment in the telecommunications industry. 4) Including supply chain activities, the net-zero sector’s economic impact rose to £83.1 billion, supporting nearly 951,000 jobs (2.9% of total UK employment). 5) Net-zero jobs are 40% more productive and offer wages 15% higher than national averages. This report highlights the importance of a clear path to net-zero, which is why we're revising our Corporate Net-Zero Standard to align with the latest climate science—helping businesses drive similar economic benefits in markets around the world. Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.
About us
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Every company has a role to play in tackling climate change. That's why our Corporate Net-Zero Standard is designed for companies of all sizes, in almost any sector, and from anywhere in the world. We provide criteria and guidance for high-emitting sectors like finance, transportation, buildings, forests, land and agriculture, which produce some of the highest amounts of emissions. We are also developing a Financial Institutions Net-Zero Standard to enable organizations in this sector to align their portfolios with net-zero. The SBTi’s sector-specific guidance, developed with input from diverse stakeholders including industry experts and climate scientists, helps businesses set emissions reduction targets based on the latest climate science and best practices. This targeted approach is key to achieving net-zero emissions and avoiding the worst effects of climate change. “Success ... hinges on our ability to integrate climate considerations into daily decision-making. Those who adapt will lead, while others risk falling behind.” J.P. Morgan recently introduced “Climate Intuition”, an advisory series designed to enhance business understanding of climate change and its financial impacts. Led by Dr. Sarah Kapnick, JP Morgan’s Global Head of Climate Advisory, the first edition acknowledges that climate change is a global issue with far reaching consequences. It concludes that if businesses wish to “stay ahead in the financial landscape," they must consider climate risks. If they want to help avoid the manifestations of climate change - such as collapsing infrastructure and extreme weather events - they must reduce their emissions; otherwise, it finds, they must prepare for these impacts. Read the first edition of “Climate Intuition" here: https://lnkd.in/g9edhJ-X The SBTi’s revision of our Corporate Net-Zero Standard aims to provide a stronger, more effective and practical framework for companies to reach net-zero, with new Expert Working Groups providing additional opportunities to contribute. Science Based Targets initiative reposted this
Today at Columbia University, Lila Karbassi, Senior Advisor on Net-Zero of the United Nations Global Compact, and Paulina Tarrant, Net-Zero Engagement manager of Science Based Targets initiative, engaged in an interactive discussion on the critical role of business in tackling climate change through science-based targets. Under the Net-Zero Standard, most companies must reduce emissions by at least 90% to reach net-zero. The economic case is clear—climate change carries significant costs, while better technology and bold action drive long-term returns. The private sector has a key role to play. João Teixeira of Natura shared how their company is leveraging SBTi to drive emissions reductions, align with net-zero goals and innovate sustainably. Implementing climate solutions is critical to securing our future. #ClimateAction #NetZero #SBTi

Great to see Tesco featured in The Guardian celebrating its validated net-zero science-based targets. Tesco is committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050. In the near-term, they plan to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 82.6% and scope 3 emissions by 55% by 2032. Net-zero is achievable when businesses take bold, science-backed action to reduce emissions and drive meaningful change. This article details many of the steps Tesco is taking to get there. We encourage more companies to follow Tesco’s lead and set their own net-zero targets using the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard. 👉 Learn more about Tesco’s journey to net-zero: https://lnkd.in/ezq7HDWm #NetZero #ScienceBasedTargets #SBTi

Reminder! On March 11, we’ll be making some important changes to our target dashboard to enhance the clarity and usability of its data. If you are a regular user of the data, you may need to prepare. The changes will include: ✅ The Legacy or "Companies Taking Action" version will be withdrawn, with an updated version of the Beta Dashboard interface becoming the single source of truth for SBTi target and commitment data. ✅ It will still be possible to download the data either by company (similar to the current ‘Legacy’ download) or by-target (as with the current ‘Beta’ version) via the updated Dashboard. ✅ New unique identifiers will be introduced: SBTi IDs will help identify distinct businesses in the data, and entry IDs will identify each business’s individual targets and commitments in the by-target download. ✅ Where possible, field names will be aligned between the by-company and by-target data downloads, resulting in some updates to the field names in either or both downloads. 👉 Ensure you are ready for these updates by reading this blog from SBTi Services Senior Data Governance Manager, Taylor Frerichs: https://lnkd.in/e_VFnKkV #SBTi #ClimateAction #ScienceBasedTargets #NetZero
