  • ⏸️ The United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee has officially suspended its fifth meeting (INC-5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. ⏰ After not being able to agree on a new global plastics treaty in Busan, the negotiators are expected to continue their work at an additional session in 2025. 👨🏻🔬👩🏽🔬🧑🏼🔬 More than 70 independent scientists from the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty participated in the INC-5 meeting to support negotiators in understanding and implementing robust knowledge, including the latest peer-reviewed science, into their positions. 🙏 We are grateful for the many independent scientists that contributed their expertise within this process.   • 💡 Upstream measures are important tools for addressing plastic pollution. Our new policy brief reviews the scientific evidence for the importance of cutting plastic pollution at the source. This includes reducing polymer production, simplifying plastic chemicals, and promoting safe and sustainable design practices. Some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Upstream measures target the extraction and processing of feedstocks (bio- and fossil fuel-based) as well as the production and processing of monomers, polymers, and associated chemicals. 2️⃣ Without a significant reduction of primary plastics introduced into the global market, facilitating economically viable plastics circularity and eliminating plastic pollution are impossible. 3️⃣ Primary plastic polymer reductions are a necessary measure for significant reductions in plastic pollution.   • ☝️ “It’s really essential that we reduce the emissions of microplastic to the environment.” Independent scientist RICHARD THOMPSON OBE FRS from the University of Plymouth is a world-renowned microplastics researcher and member of our coalition. Just days away from the start of #INC5, he wants to help negotiators understand the scientific facts on microplastics: 1️⃣ Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and humans are exposed to them. 2️⃣ Published animal studies show their potential for harm, and we humans are just another animal species. Similar findings of harm to humans are expected by scientists in the future. 3️⃣ Microplastic pollution can only be addressed by considering all of the key sources. 🙋♀️ Have questions?   • ❗ Removing plastics from the environment cannot alone solve the global plastics crisis. Our latest policy brief brings together the most recent scientific evidence to empower methods used to remove existing and legacy plastic pollution to be safe, sustainable, and productive including: 1️⃣ Harmonized standards and methods for safe and sustainable removal and remediation are crucial. 2️⃣ Science-based criteria and regulations are needed to ensure that the environmental benefits of removal activities outweigh their costs. 3️⃣ When prioritizing areas for removal and/or remediation, the volume and hazardousness of plastic pollution as well as the function, productivity, and vulnerability of ecosystems should be considered. 4️⃣ Removal activities should be socially just, transparent, and comply with health and safety standards and responsible handling of collected waste. 📄 Download and read the full policy brief below ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dZzvZ-EJ 📚 More resources are available on our LinkTree: https://lnkd.in/eMvvq7iA
