The SLS teaches contact lens practitioners the science and art of prescribing scleral contact lenses.

About us

The Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS) was established in 2009 as an organization to help bring professional consensus to the suddenly rapidly growing area of scleral lenses. The mission statement of the SLS reads: “The Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS) is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3) committed to teaching contact lens practitioners the science and art of fitting all designs of scleral contact lenses for the purpose of managing corneal irregularity and ocular surface disease. SLS supports public education that highlights the benefits and availability of scleral contact lenses.” Beginning with the founding board which included world renown experts in scleral lens fitting such as Greg DeNaeyer, OD, Christine Sindt, OD, and Bruce Baldwin, OD, PhD, the SLS has worked to spread the word about the potential benefits of scleral lens wear to both providers and patients alike. Professional education has included scleral lens webinars, workshops, and lecture series that are always standing room only events. Currently, the SLS has over 2000 member contact lens practitioners as well as over 50 fellows, or certified scleral lens fitters that have demonstrated their expertise through a peer reviewed process of case reports, publications, and lectures. Many of these members and fellows are international, with SLS fellows from 11 countries, 5 different continents, and 20 different states in the US. Members hail from all 50 states, 6 continents, and over 40 countries. In addition, the SLS has numerous industry sponsors that support the mission of the society to provide patient access to experienced fitters across the world. The sponsors provide the resources that allow the educational opportunities for practitioners as well as the website and patient resources that are available.

  • “Can you spot the problem? Many scleral lenses have 1 or 2 shallow indented dots on the edge to differentiate the right and left lenses and to help with proper orientation of the lens on the eye. Although lens breakage and edge chips are not common when lenses are handled properly, they can happen. And, sometimes these defects may happen near the dots, where the lens is thinner. Make sure to evaluate the lens edges carefully and replace when necessary. Just ordered a new one to replace this chipped lens!” Repost @gloriachiuod

  • “Scleral Lens for Glaucoma Surgery This patient has a very large bleb with a patch graft. She also underwent a second corneal transplant in the left eye due to graft failure. With patients like these, we try and maximize oxygen. We attempted a variety of corneal gas permeable lenses but nothing would stick to the eye. With the help of the experts at Bausch and Lomb, we designed a BiElevation ZenLens scleral with a huge micro vault (should we rename it macro vault? Haha!) She is doing great at the dispense. We are going to monitor the bleb for signs of compression or erosion and check her pressure frequently. We are co-managing this patient with her referring ophthalmologist, Dr. DeBry. Looking forward to seeing how she does!” Repost @drstephaniewoo

  • ““Details Make the Difference” In the world of contact lenses, success lies in the details. With profilometry, we achieve precise measurements that allow us to fit lenses even to complex and irregular ocular shapes. These detailed scans of the ocular surface provide the lab with all the necessary data to create a custom lens, perfectly tailored to the patient’s eye morphology, enhancing both comfort and vision. 👉🏼 Recently, we designed a scleral lens for a patient with keratoconus and a highly irregular ocular surface. This resulted in an optimal outcome, hardly achievable with “standard” scleral lenses—a clear example of how technology can transform the visual experience.” Repost @dr.charlesdibenedetto

  • “In the image, we show a scleral lens fitted on a patient with a corneal transplant. This type of lens is ideal for cases where corneal irregularity—such as in patients with advanced keratoconus, ectasias, or, as in this case, corneal transplants—prevents clear vision with conventional lenses.” Repost @opt.irvingmnv

  • What an incredible evening at the Scleral Lens Workshop hosted at the Southern California College of Optometry at MBKU (@ketchumuniversity) The event kicked off with a fantastic dinner provided by Mendocino Farms, followed by an engaging lecture on “The Everyday Challenges of Scleral Lenses.” Attendees had the unique opportunity to explore 8 interactive stations featuring: • Scleral lens designs from Bausch + Lomb (Zenlens), CooperVision SEC (OneFit MED), TruForm (Digiform), and Essilor (Jupiter). • Specialized lens coatings and products by Tangible Science. • Advanced imaging technology with the Pentacam CSP for scleral profilometry. • Anterior segment OCT applications for scleral lens fitting. • Hands-on tools to improve scleral lens application and removal. This workshop highlighted the collaborative spirit of our industry partners and our collective commitment to advancing scleral lens education. A special thank you to Drs. Tiffany Park and Jun Wing Chen, SCCO’s dedicated cornea and contact lens residents, for their outstanding efforts in organizing this impactful event for the 3rd-year optometry students. At the Scleral Lens Education Society, we are proud to support and promote events like these, empowering the next generation of practitioners with the skills and knowledge to excel in specialty contact lens care.
