Privileged to be speaking with Guido Helmerhorst and CJ Conway about the creation of #ContentforGood that emerged from the design project sponsored by Maude's Ventures. We sought to make an impact in dementia caregiving. What I didn't expect was the breadth of people choosing to contribute their time, talents and technology to make it happen. We've developed a method of using immersive technology to train difficult caregiving skills. Come learn more about it at VRARA Healthcare Summit (registration in original post). Who knew over 100 stakeholders in research compliance would be interested in spending 3 hours working through case studies on Immersive Technology on a Sunday morning? Collectively, they did risk mitigation analyses for these real studies: (1) TMS-driven haptics in VR environments (2) Biofeedback in first-person fear/stress induction in VR environments (3) Re-identification of individuals from motion tracking data We even posed the question, with some debate, "Does all of this even qualify as Human Subjects Research?" If its not officially research, there are no clear protections. Thank you PRIM&R - Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research for inviting XRSI and the SCU Healthcare Innovation and Design program to deliver this educational workshop. It was truly a bi-directional learning experience. Had a wonderful time co-leading the IDEA Lab alongside Cristina Cismas Florea! We are very grateful to the participants and the mentors for their time and efforts, and the SCU Ciocca Center and Santa Clara University Bronco Venture Accelerator for their support. #designthinking #innovation #entrereneurship #studenttraining
💡Idea Lab Workshop was a huge success!🧠💡 A fantastic mix of undergrads, grad students, and alumni came together to unleash their creativity and build impactful solutions. With collaboration in full swing, participants dove into “creative chaos,” working to understand customer needs and shape ideas that make a difference. A special shoutout to our mentors who made this possible with their time, expertise, and inspiration! 👏✨ Ellen Linardi; Mike Kovalich; Brian Thomas; Robert Rapp; John Giddings; Angel C.; Roger Smullen; Anne Scholz; Bebasish Bose; Jessie Lai; Shilpi Agarwal; Vyas Sreenivas; Trevor Nelson Can’t wait to see you at our next Prep School cohort in March or our Business Pitch Competition in May!🌟 📌Apply for Prep School here: https://lnkd.in/e6ruNwrV 📌Sign up for Business Pitch Comp here: https://lnkd.in/gPaSZMuY SCU Ciocca Center Santa Clara University SCU Entrepreneurship at Leavey SCU Alumni Association B.E.A.C.H Santa Clara University School of Engineering Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business SCU College of Arts and Sciences Cristina Cismas Florea Cynthia Cooper Prashanth Asuri Marcella Sorrentino Jarrett Powell-Odden Siddhi Kabadi Giap Do #IdeaLab #CreativeCollaboration #DesignThinking #EntrepreneursStartHere #Innovation

The Brain and Memory Care Lab of the SCU Healthcare Innovation and Design Program is focused on innovations for dementia care with the support of Maude's Ventures. The research we have done around caregiver needs and technology use will be presented at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 2024 annual meeting Nov. 14, led by Patti Simone (she/they) with student Nora Reder. The research showed us that most people did not how to find or use digital solutions that could potentially ease the persistent challenges of caregiving. To more effectively use technology to support family caregivers, we encourage these strategies to bridge that gap: Age-inclusive software design to help with care tasks and self-care, especially related to emotional struggles and problem-solving. Access to digital tech centers where caregivers can get assistance early on and often. Equitable access to the tools and resources to help PLWD and their caregivers. The team that contributed to this work over the years is expansive and could not have occurred in isolation. The leadership of Quentin Orem and Prashanth Asuri has been key. The support of donors like Bob Breshock and Kristina and Mark Grey has helped grow the program. XRSI and SCU Healthcare Innovation and Design are co-hosting a workshop at #primr2024 on the topics we know best: Immersive Technologies and Human Subjects Protections Alongside Bhanujeet Choudhary, we will delve into three case studies of XR research that pushes the boundaries of IRB review processes. We have created a guiding set of questions for compliance officers and IRB committee members to ask when faced with a XR study protocol. This is pertinent as new risks emerge as technology progresses. Older processes don't explicitly capture these facets. Our goal is provide a way to efficiently assess risk to human subjects and implement realistic mitigation strategies. Thank you to Aryan B. who wrote the case studies with me and prepared the online resources. Thank you to the labs that consulted with us in the development of the case studies: Mark Miller of University of Illinois, Pedro Lopes of University of Chicago, and Paul Fletcher of Cambridge University Thank you to Markkula Center for Applied Ethics for supporting this research effort. You want to see how we are transforming neuromodulation studies with continuous EEG data collection? In our journey to make brain data accessible and impactful, collaborations like the one with Julia Scott’s lab at Santa Clara University are milestones! The #IDUNGuardian is empowering researchers to dive deeper into understanding the brain's real-time responses to various interventions. 🔍 Julia Scott’s Experience: "The IDUN Guardian, being physically offset from the modulation devices, changed the way we run our studies. Instead of intermittently pausing the stimulation to get clean recordings, we can now collect a continuous and clean EEG dataset during the experiment. This literally enables us to answer questions we were not able to prior to bringing the IDUN system into the lab." Through the IDUN Guardian, Julia’s team can now confidently capture raw data during demanding protocols like the Montreal Imaging Stress Test, perform eyes-open/eyes-closed validations, and more! This unlocks new insights into spectral and neural network changes, bringing innovative possibilities for their workload studies and stress management interventions. We’re excited about future iterations and seeing what breakthroughs the IDUN Guardian will inspire next! #neurotech #IDUNGuardian #brainhealth #neuroscience
