In October 2024, Valencia faced devastating floods, with torrential rains transforming streets into rivers. Such disasters highlight the urgent need for advanced tools to predict and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather. A digital twin of the ocean could play a key role by: 📊 Monitoring real-time ocean and weather data to forecast events. 🔮 Simulating flood scenarios for better preparedness. 🤝 Supporting decision-makers with actionable insights for response plans. By supporting the creation of a virtual replica of the ocean, #SEADITO takes part in helping communities adapt to a changing climate. 🌍 📸: NASA Earth Observatory

🌍 Destination Earth: Revolutionizing Environmental Insight with Digital Earth Models 🌍 Imagine a world where we can predict environmental changes before they happen. That’s the vision of Destination Earth (DestinE)—a transformative EU initiative aimed at developing a digital replica of our planet. This "Digital Twin Earth" will give us unparalleled real-time insights into the complex interactions between natural systems and human activity, empowering us to make smarter, more sustainable decisions. 🌿📊 By integrating data from climate, oceans, biodiversity, and beyond, DestinE tackles global challenges like climate change, disaster preparedness, and resource sustainability. 🚀 SEADITO is proud to play a key role in this initiative through its contribution to the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO). Alongside other sibling projects like EDITO-Infra, EDITO-Model Lab, AquaINFRA, and DTO-BioFlow, SEADITO is advancing social-ecological models that connect human behavior with marine ecosystems. Together, these projects ensure that DestinE delivers a powerful toolkit for sustainable marine management across regions like the Baltic, Mediterranean, and North Seas. 🌊🔬 By collaborating within the Destination Earth framework, we are collectively transforming environmental management with cutting-edge digital solutions. #DestinationEarth #DigitalTwin #Sustainability #SEADITO #EnvironmentalTech #ClimateSolutions #EUDTO #AquaINFRA #EDITOModelLab #DTOBioFlow 📸: European Space Agency

🌊 A main goal of #SEADITO is to develop an accurate digital model of the global ocean 🌐. Essentially, it will be as identical as possible to the real ocean 🌍, which is why we call it a twin! 👯♂️ With this realistic model, it will become possible to monitor 🛰️, simulate 🖥️, and predict 🔮 interactions between humans 🧑🤝🧑 and the ocean 🌊. #DigitalTwin 🌐 #OceanScience 🌊 #MarineLife 🐟 #SustainableFuture 🌱 #ProtectOurOceans 🌍 #ClimateAction ♻️ 📸: Adobe Stock, Nabugu

🌟 What is a model? 🌍 A model is a simplification of a process or mechanism, used to help us explain something! 🔎 A model may be physical, such as a 🌎 globe representing planet Earth, or it may be abstract, like 🧮 mathematical equations explaining how 🐟 fish grow with age. Although no model is perfect, they are representations of reality and better help us understand and predict natural processes 🌊. 🌐 SEADITO aims to create an accurate digital model of the ocean, enhancing our understanding of the ocean and its inhabitants. 🌟 📸: Adobe Stock, Billionphotos

🌊 Mission Ocean: A Pathway to Restoring Our Ocean and Waters by 2030 🌊 The EU's Mission Ocean initiative is a bold and necessary step toward addressing the critical need to restore the health of our oceans and waters by 2030. Through innovative research, citizen engagement, and blue investments, this initiative aims to protect marine ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and secure the sustainable use of marine resources. 🌍🌿 Central to this mission is the creation of the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO), a powerful digital model that will allow for real-time monitoring, simulations, and predictions of oceanic and human interactions. By combining natural and socio-economic data, EU DTO will play a pivotal role in understanding and addressing the complexities of our marine environments. 💡 At SEADITO, we are proud to be part of this endeavor. SEADITO contributes to the mission by developing advanced social-ecological models that help integrate human activities with marine spatial planning. Our project’s aim is to test, calibrate, and validate these models through case studies in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Mediterranean regions, ensuring they align with the EU DTO vision. 🌊🔬 Together, we are taking critical steps toward a more sustainable and resilient ocean future. #MissionOcean #EUDTO #BlueEconomy #SustainableOceans #MarineManagement #SEADITO Aalborg University SINTEF 📸Photo: Publication Office of the European Union

🌍 Politicians, researchers, and representatives from NGOs were present when SEADITO officially launched its three-year project period in Oslo. 💬 «Many of us have childhood memories of catching cod in the Oslofjord, and now most of it has disappeared,” said Eirik Lae Solberg, Governing Mayor of Oslo, during his opening remarks in the official launch of the SEADITO project in the Oslo City Hall. Lae Solberg’s speech introduced the dramatic situation in the Oslofjord, which is one of six case studies in the SEADITO project. The Oslofjord struggles with pollution from sewage, climate change, and more than 130 years of local fisheries. 🎣🌊 👉 If you are interested in reading more on SEADITO's open seminar, click the link below! https://lnkd.in/dKG2gEDz

As we are looking forward to the SEADITO kick-off meeting tomorrow 🌊, the entire consortium of partners met for an internal discussion on the overall goals for the project. We have heard several thoughts on the EU's ambitious missions for restoring our oceans and waters 🌍 and the essential role of Digital Twins in this effort 💻. The day began with a warm welcome from Eva Næss Karlsen and Henning Sten Hansen. We then had the privilege of hearing insightful presentations from Nicolas Segebarth, Zoi Konstantinou, and Pilar Roman, on the visions, models, and guidelines that will drive SEADITO forward. Henning Sten Hansen also outlined the project's ambitious roadmap. The afternoon was spent in collaborative preparation for tomorrow’s SEADITO Kick-off Conference, where all project partners contributed to finalizing the agenda 📝☕.
