About us
Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) is not just a place—it’s a movement, a community, and a space where math learning and exploration thrive. It’s a place where we show that math is for everyone, no matter their age, background, or prior experience. We are united under the shared belief that math is the universal language of problem-solving. As a city deeply rooted in STEM, Seattle is a national leader in the application of math across multiple fields. SUMM is committed to expanding access and opportunity to math education. We are dedicated to sparking curiosity through engaging hands-on experiences for all learners to value the beauty and strength of math. The Seattle Universal Math Museum hosts events and interactive programming in partnership with libraries, schools, community centers, farmers markets, and other museums across the Puget Sound region. We offer fun, educational programming that increases math literacy and connects math to children’s everyday lives in a way that feels like play. We prioritize serving students who face the greatest barriers to math success including girls, low-income students, neurodiverse learners, and communities of color – basically anyone who has been historically marginalized from high expectations and quality math education. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, SUMM hosted 268 events serving nearly 12,000 students, educators, and families. Of those events 75% were in communities of opportunity with 72% being funded through grants and donations. Our long-term dream is to open a flagship museum, filled with interactive exhibits. It will be a place for families to play together or school groups to have math adventures. Serving the community is at the heart of what we do. So if you ask where is SUMM located, I answer EVERYWHERE in our community. Because that is where you will find us and that is where you find mathematics, everywhere.

Happy Mathematician Monday! For the start of Women's History Month, we're honoring the life and works of Ada Lovelace (1815-1852). . Lovelace was a mathematician and writer. She was born in England to the poet Lord Byron and philanthropist Lady Byron during their tumultuous one year of marriage, after which Lord Byron fled England and his debts, leaving Lovelace with her mother. Lady Byron had a passion for mathematics and hired tutors to instruct young Lovelace, sometimes to the neglect of other subjects. . Lovelace was introduced to Charles Babbage in 1833 at one of his famous Saturday Soirées by her friend and tutor Mary Somerville. His early computer, the “difference engine,” inspired Lovelace’s interest in computing. She continued studying mathematics under various teachers, including Augustus De Morgan, whose work on logic proved foundational to computer science. . When Babbage years later described his next computer, the “analytical engine,” Lovelace wrote an algorithm for it to compute Bernoulli numbers. Her code was published along with her notes in 1843, and is thought to be the first published computer program. . Lovelace died from cancer at the age of 37, a tragic end to a budding scientific career. What's a skill you're currently working on mastering? #mathematicianmonday #womeninstem #womenshistorymonth #adalovelace #mathisforeveryone #mathiseverywhere

Happy Mathematician Monday! Today, we honor the life and work of Etta Falconer (1933-2002). A mathematician and educator, Falconer was born in Tupelo, Mississippi to parents who were both college-educated, a rarity in Black America at the time. While at Fisk College, she studied math under Evelyn Granville, the second African-American woman to receive a math Ph.D. in the United States. Later citing Granville as a career role model, Falconer went on to earn an M.S. in math from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. Falconer’s early teaching career was set in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education and in the thick of the civil rights movement. She taught at several high schools and colleges before taking a position in 1965 at Spelman College, the historically Black women’s college where she would spend most of her career. A life-long learner, she continued her education while teaching at Spelman, earning a Ph.D. from Emory University in 1969 and an M.S. in computer science from Atlanta University in 1982. Today, Falconer’s most enduring legacy is her effort to encourage Black women to pursue careers in STEM fields, through both her teaching career and her work with professional organizations like the AAAS, AMS, AWM, MAA, NIS, and NSF. Since 1996, the AWM and MAA have presented the Etta Zuber Falconer Lecture each summer at MathFest, honoring "women who have made distinguished contributions to the mathematical sciences or mathematics education". Who is an educator that inspires you? #mathematicianmonday #mathiseverywhere #mathisfun #blackmathematicians
