Second Harvest's mission is to end hunger in our community.
About us
Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. Sarah’s daughter, Ava, has always had a big heart. When Ava was nine, she witnessed the unhoused around town and wanted to find a way to help those in need. Sarah began to research and found that the food pantry at their church, Westgate Church in South Hills, would allow Ava to volunteer. Three years of volunteering as a mother-daughter duo has been a special journey for Ava and her mom at their church food pantry. ⛪🍲🍽️ Sarah shared, “Because of Ava’s motivation to help people, she quickly became an asset to the team, and we’ve been volunteering ever since!” #50YearsofVolunteering

📖 On #NationalPhilanthropyDay, we celebrate the power of community and generosity. 🤝 In Winter 1989, thanks to the heartfelt plea of San Jose Mercury News columnist Jim Trotter, thousands of children's books were donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, Emergency Housing Consortium, and Headstart. These books brought joy to the holiday season, enriching holiday baskets for families in need, supporting literacy programs, and benefiting childcare facilities for low-income families. We're grateful for the community's ongoing commitment to making a difference, and we hope to continue this legacy of giving for many seasons to come 🌟. #50YearsofCommunityGiving #PhilanthropyMatters

Socially disadvantaged farmworkers, particularly on the coast, are an underrepresented community still dealing with the aftermath of a recent tragedy. Second Harvest, in partnership with Ayudando Latinos A Soñar, is creating a safe space for farmworkers to learn, share, and make informed food choices 🍽️ while connecting them to our food bank services. Through a holistic approach with culturally relevant food and tailored nutrition education, we’re working to empower farmworkers to thrive and achieve health equity. 🌱🤝🏽 #HealthEquity #FarmworkerWellness #ALAS

🍉 “The other day, my grandson said, ‘Grandma, can we go get a watermelon?’ and I said, ‘I don't have money,’ but I am seeing that today they are giving out watermelon and I hope I can get one for my grandson and me. My grandson has been saying for several days, ‘I want watermelon,’ and I tell him, ‘We can't. Wait.’ And check it out [holds up watermelon]! I’m so excited to have a watermelon and I am going to enjoy it happily because we didn't have any of these foods either [points to the bananas and strawberries in her cart]. We ran out of food about five days ago. These are things that we like, and we had nothing. I am very excited! 🍌🍽️🍓 When he sees me bringing the watermelon home, he will say, ‘My watermelon!’ I know him. He’ll get very excited.” With her pushcart full of fresh food, Maria is grateful to keep cooking for her kids and grandkids—one step, one meal, and one cherished moment at a time. #50YearsofNourishment

🇺🇸 This Veterans Day, we're honoring Michael, an Air Force veteran and dedicated volunteer at our St. John Vianney distribution site. Michael shares, “I am very proud to be there to honor our veterans with a salute and a thank you, and I like to start conversations to inquire how they are doing when I put food into their vehicles.” Alongside his wife, Alphonse-Marie, Michael commits his time and service each week to help reduce hunger, saying, 'My lovely wife Alphonse-Marie and I commit our time, effort, and service handing out food at multiple parish sites each week.' This Veterans Day, your support can make an even greater impact. If we can raise $50,000 from our community by midnight, Second Harvest supporters will triple every gift—helping provide enough food for 6 meals for every dollar donated. Triple your gift: https://lnkd.in/gTGkwM2E
