Interesting article about the influence of cyber insurance on cybersecurity by Jason R.C. Nurse and Rodney Hood Adriko M.Sc, CISSP, CIPM, CISA, CRISC, CEH, CBE, AWS CCP. When comparing the questions on cyber insurance applications to frameworks (eg: NIST, ISO, UK Cyber Essentials): ✅ Insurers focus on technical, preventive controls (e.g., firewalls, malware protection) but often neglect governance, procedural, and incident recovery controls. ✅ Incident management, secure configurations, and user access controls are underrepresented. ✅ Recovery measures are nearly absent, which undermines resilience against prolonged cyber incidents. While the focus on technical controls is perhaps driven by the need to balance information gathering with efficiency (i.e. carriers have to compete not only on cost but how long and complicated their applications are) don't assume that carriers aren't also concerned about access control (beyond MFA), secure configurations, governance and incident management. And also, the lack of depth is an example of the medium ("the application") and competition driving the quality and depth of the questions being asked. More underwriters, like SeedPod Cyber are beginning to leverage telemetry and partnerships to gather data beyond the application in order to improve the transparency of the risk they are underwriting. And, insurers are heavily focused on IR via the claims management process and typically work with law firms and IR teams that have strong playbooks built to help best manage the incident (at least to minimize costs to the carrier). That being said, firms with strong (and tested) resilience procedures in place will have lower claims costs and reduced reputational impact and will translate to lower relative premiums over time. Takeaways of this report to IT Professionals and Risk Management Consultants: ✅ IT Professionals and consultants can use the Technical Controls section as a quick risk assessment to determine insurability of their prospects or clients. ✅ That being said, simply checking a "yes" to an insurance application question doesn't mean the business has effective controls in place (access control, as an example). Effective risk management is not binary; it requires a series of interrelated activities that mature over time. ✅ IT Professionals and consultants can differentiate themselves by emphasizing resilience and governance as part of their overall security program. This will pay off especially for larger firms as they approach their insurance renewals. ✅ The limitations of gathering valuable cyber underwriting information from an application will drive more underwriting to be done from telemetry than paper. ✅ Don't expect insurance underwriting (nor applications) to be static; cyber threats are dynamic and changing and so will be the approach to evaluating cyber risk. https://lnkd.in/eCa4zari
