About us
Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) was established in 1981, by Tony Hopson, Sr., a lifelong North Portland resident and community leader. It began as a one-week summer basketball camp aimed at providing a positive alternative for African American teens living in an area of Portland that was leaving them behind. By 1989, SEI had grown into a year-round program providing academic support and comprehensive wraparound services for African American students and their families. In 1997, SEI opened the Center for Self Enhancement, which continues to serve as a safe haven for thousands of children and is the hub of SEI’s work. SEI has remained a pillar in the North Portland community and continues to expand its programs to provide youth and families with a continuum of services. Today, SEI is a comprehensive, one-stop resource for youth and families, primarily African Americans and others living in poverty or seeking culturally responsive services. It is also one of the city’s leading multi-service organizations, providing thousands of youth, families, and adults with a wide array of education and social services on an annual basis. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational and economic barriers. SEI is committed to helping youth and families realize their full potential. SEI believes that every child has a gift and that it is our shared responsibility to help every child find that gift. By expanding learning opportunities and teaching every child that “Life Has Options,” SEI is seeing amazing results proving that SEI is the solution.

🐎8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo🐎 Juneteenth had an extra kick this year, and the SEI Elite Dance Team had the opportunity to participate in an eye-opening round-up with a wardrobe made in our very own Makerspace Studio. The event celebrates the Black cowboy and spotlights Black athletes. The rodeo brings the Portland community together. As described by the rodeo’s cofounder, Ivan McClellan, Black Rodeo is “the perfect blending of hip-hop culture, Black church, and Western culture.” . . . 📸 Zach Doleac for The Players’ Tribune

🏝️MIA ➡️ PDX☔️ Meet our little-big brother, OYC Miami, a replication of Self Enhancement, Inc., founded in 2003 by NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies, creating a haven for children living in Overtown and neighboring communities. OYC staff flew to Portland to learn about SEI's relationship model and culture and shadow our wraparound services. We're excited to continue to foster our replication model in Miami💫

School's Grad School of Education Makery, Menlo School Makerspace, East Palo Alto Archive Project, GSE Library Makerspace and Teen Center, and Redwood City Boys and Girls Club. SEI is building a new Tech Lab for students to gain exposure to careers in the tech industry through a large grant that will be used to create a pathway into the growing semiconductor industry. SEI's Semiconductor Pathways Program is coming this fall! The Tech Tour was an opportunity to learn from others who have successfully created educational tech programs for students. We had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia at the Center for Self Enhancement this morning. She's a former Demo and Queen of Rosaria. She is also a dear alumnus of the SEI class of ’98. She provided a trauma-informed training, and her expertise helped our staff and community members examine the neurobiology of fear, brain development, trauma, substance use, mental health, structural bias, and environmental factors that pose a threat to healthy brain development. "Just how trauma can be passed on from one generation to another, so can healing," shared Dr. Moreland-Capuia. SEI is exceptionally proud to have hosted her breadth of knowledge with the SEI community!
