📣 Call for Abstracts! SEMACRET is promoting a session at hashtag #EGU25 dedicated to INNOVATIVE APPROACHES IN MINERAL EXPLORATION: FROM ORE FORMING PROCESSES TO NEW EXPLORATION METHODS Submission deadline is January 15th, come and join us! Session description (https://lnkd.in/dy78JWev) Critical raw materials are fundamental to supply industrial value chains, strategic sectors and to support the rapidly increasing demand for metals associated with the energy transition. Mineral exploration usually relies on drilling geophysical and, to a lesser degree, geochemical anomalies to identify and delineate ore deposits. This approach results in significant environmental impact and thus high exploration costs. Increasing deposit discovery rates requires a continuous effort to improve our understanding of ore formation processes. Such understanding is fundamental to increase the efficiency of exploration methods and minimize their environmental and social impacts. In this session we invite the submission of studies that provide advances in the study of mineral deposits of magmatic, hydrothermal or sedimentary origin, as well as application of mineral exploration techniques. We particularly welcome those studies that have employed holistic, knowledge-driven methods such as the Mineral System Approach and that envisage mineral deposits as the successful interplay between a source, a pathway and a sink for metals in difference geological and geodynamic contexts. We further welcome studies that provide advancements in tracing the footprints and fingerprints of mineral deposits, such as geochemical and geophysical methods that enable translating the source-pathway-sink into efficient exploration criteria, or their integration in prospectivity models. https://lnkd.in/dy78JWev

An Horizon Europe Project to promote sustainable exploration of critical raw materials
About us
SEMACRET is an Horizon Europe Project aiming to promote sustainable exploration of Critical Raw Materials in the EU securing the continued supply for our industries. This project is designed to develop socially and environmentally sustainable means of finding (=exploration) orthomagmatic Critical Raw Materials applying the Mineral Systems Approach to guide exploration and deliver our 3 goals. The Mineral Systems Approach aims at identifying the major ingredients necessary to form an ore deposit: - The source of the magmas within the mantle. - The pathway of the magmas to the crust. - The sink within the crust that will allow to trap the metals in high concentrated, exploitable amounts. Improved formation models for orthomagmatic mineral deposits. 2) New exploration methods to identify areas of high exploration potential, from regional scale to local scale, increasing exploration efficiency, reducing exploration costs and minimizing environmental impact. 3) Methods to promote social awareness of the importance of raw materials for twin transitions, and responsible exploration and mining through collaboration between geosciences and social sciences. Our research will be conducted at four reference sites in Finland, Portugal, Poland and the Czech Republic representing different geological, social and environmental conditions. Our team gathers specialists from the academia and industry in the orthomagmatic deposit field, including geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mathematical and resource modelling, artificial intelligence, geoinformatics and social sciences (e.g., social geography, environmental policy).

🚨 New paper alert!! This work exploits the close spatiotemporal association of komatiites from the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt in Lapland, Finland (Paleoproterozoic- 2.05 Ga) to sulfur (S)-rich country rocks to assess their potential as source rocks for Cu-Ni(-PGE) deposits. Our scientists combined new data, with literature databases to perform thermodynamic modelling of the parental melts, degree of partial melting and crystal fractionation paths showing that komatiitic parental melts can form either Ni-rich or Cu-rich sulfide melts, depending on the initial Ni and S content of the parental melt. https://lnkd.in/d4CP5wAS

Time flies and we have now hit the 2 year milestone. Our semestral meeting was hosted by our Czech partners in the beautiful city of Prague. For 2 days we discussed our achievements, shared knowledge and defined the roadmap to the finish line. Integrating datasets as diverse as surface geochemistry, rock geochemistry, geophysics, at regional and local scales using machine learning and prospectivity mapping is incredibly challenging. For this reason, we break out in specialized workshops where the science teams from various disciplines and reference sites can cross information and have in-depth discussions. Some of these took 2 extra days of our meeting making it for a very busy week! The highlight of this meeting was the possibility to finally visit the Reference site of Ransko, a Variscan (ultra-mafic) intrusion that hosts sulfide mineralization. The relevance of orogenic intrusions for magmatic ore deposits has been on a steady rise and SEMACRET will make important contributions from the study of Ransko and Beja (Portugal), our other Variscan reference site hosting oxide mineralization.

The MINEARC seminar is approaching! Our presenters representing 20 countries are ready to share knowledge on their research, education mining and and exploration projects. Check the agenda here https://lnkd.in/d_N4RiCB
🛑 Webinar alert! 🛑 In this event, we will bring together a wide range of stakeholders in the exploration ecosystem, including research projects developing new exploration technologies, exploration companies, resource rich African countries, educational programs, regional authorities, as well as other interested stakeholders, to discuss about the mineral resource potential, current technological and societal challenges and possible solutions. Critical raw materials (CRM) are crucial for the green energy transition, however, there are challenges the mineral sectors are facing. To build up a sustainable mineral ecosystem, we need collaboration among the whole value chain of raw materials from exploration to mining, recycling and social and environmental sectors. In this event, we will focus on exploration which is the upper stream of the mineral value chain. This event is co-organized by the MINEARC project (funded by Bureau of Energy Resources of US), and Horizon Europe Projects (SEMACRET, EIS, AGEMERA) and EIT Raw Materials project MinExTarget. In the near future, MINEARC together with other relevant projects, will organize similar events on the other sectors of the raw material value chain. 📅 23 April 2024, 09.00 – 16.00 EET | 24 April 2024, 09.00 – 12.00 EET 📍 Online participation is free, but registration is mandatory. 📒 Agenda and form at https://lnkd.in/d_N4RiCB Oulu Mining School | Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK) | Luleå University of Technology | ERA-MIN 3 ERA-NET Cofund | EIS_HorizonEU | AGEMERA EU Project | MinExTarget EIT RM project | Mining Finland
