"I make sure that there is adequate lighting in rooms before I walk at night. I make sure that my nightstand is close to the bed and I can reach the light. I wipe spills on the floor immediately. I'm not afraid to travel now. I have confidence in myself." "This was a very good class to increase awareness of hazards in my environment and changes I need to make." Comments like these from participants in A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls workshops underscore the value and effectiveness of evidence-based fall prevention programming. A Matter of Balance curriculum focuses on changing the way older adults think about falls, addressing environmental risks, and learning appropriate exercises. Senior Connection Center, Inc. provides the workshops to help individuals age 60 and older improve their balance and prevent falls, factors that help participants improve their quality of life. Will you join our fall prevention efforts? There are several ways to become involved. Consider hosting a workshop in your community. The multi-week workshops are free for both the host site and the participants. You may also want to become a volunteer coach to help facilitate the workshops. If you are a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or nurse, consider volunteering as a Guest Healthcare Professional to provide a one-hour presentation/demonstration on fall prevention during one session of a workshop. Although #FallsPreventionAwarenessWeek may end today, the work continues year round. Will you join us? Message Senior Connection Center, Inc. for more information.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week begins today! Why the emphasis on falls prevention? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , one in four older adults age 65 or older fall each year, and of those falls, one out of 10 results in an injury that impacts the older adult’s activities or causes them to seek medical care. The good news is falls are not a normal part of aging! Most falls are indeed preventable. What can you do to prevent falls? If you fall, talk with your healthcare provider. The reason for the fall may be apparent, such as a loose throw rug. However, determining the cause may take more medical detective work. Speaking of loose throw rugs, take some time this week to look around your home to identify environmental issues that may be a fall risk. National Institute on Aging (NIA) has a resource that will help identify fall risks in each room of your home. https://lnkd.in/gy-8XvgV Remember, most falls are preventable! #FallsPreventionAwarenessWeek
