This week #SERVIRSoutheastAsia team was part of the workshop focused on enhancing the understanding and utilization of satellite-based soil moisture data, in the context of climate, agriculture, and disaster risk management. This workshop convened experts in soil moisture, remote sensing, GIS, climate science, agriculture, and data science to discuss methodologies for producing enhanced soil moisture information and addressing the challenges associated with its use in Southeast Asia. Experts exchanged ideas on how to tackle challenges such as the lack of awareness among stakeholders, limited ground observation networks for calibration and validation, and the need for tailored methodologies to address regional characteristics and land cover types that hinder the utilization of satellite-based soil moisture data in Southeast Asia. “This workshop was built on last year’s first seminar, which focused on the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Mission. It reflects the ongoing and strengthened collaboration since that event. We consider satellite-based soil moisture data and geospatial tools pivotal for climate resilience, disaster monitoring, and sustainable farming,” Chinaporn (Pin) Meechaiya, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Lead for SERVIR SEA, said during the panel session titled “Soil Moisture Data in Southeast Asia: Importance, Challenges, Current State, and Way Forward”. The workshop was co-organized by SERVIR SEA, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL, the Asian Institute of Technology, the Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII), and Kasetsart University . The insights and advancements from this workshop are expected to enhance soil moisture data quality within the SERVIR SEA applications, benefiting flash flood, drought, landslide, and forest fire monitoring and response capabilities. SERVIR SEA leverages science and technology to strengthen the capacity for climate mitigation and adaptation across Southeast Asia. Check out geospatial tools introduced by SERVIR SEA here: bit.ly/3JWU87f SERVIR SEA -- a partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) -- uses publicly available satellite technologies and geospatial data to help communities across Southeast Asia adapt to regional and transboundary climate issues and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
