About us

At the San Francisco SPCA we envision a world in which the love people share with animals uplifts humanity to a state of greater compassion. On a spring day in 1868, San Francisco banker James Sloan Hutchinson caught sight of two men dragging a terrified hog along the rough cobblestone street. Appalled, Hutchinson stepped in to stop the cruelty and rescue the hog. The incident crystallized Hutchinson’s concern over widespread animal abuse, and he soon rallied 15 like-minded citizens to found the San Francisco SPCA. Since then the SF SPCA has become one of San Francisco’s most enduring and respected institutions. It is a national leader in saving homeless cats and dogs and working to end animal abandonment. We all share a common passion here at the San Francisco SPCA. Not just for the animals saved, but for their companions and those in our community who then foster, volunteer, or adopt. Whether affected by illness, injury, or homelessness, the animals we help need our expertise and compassion. You could wake up every day knowing you’ll be “doing good work” in a fulfilling environment where no two days are the same. The SF SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for 150+ years, and Vision 2030 is our plan to positively impact 5+ million lives over the next decade. We are looking for animal-loving professionals to help us turn this vision into reality!

  • Our pups from LA are settling in and two have even been adopted! Although they came to us under scary circumstances and as a result of a crisis, we’re so happy they’re here and ready to be adopted by great Bay Area folks. Bambi and Chowder have been adopted, but Lugnut is available in our adoption center. Mina will be available for adoption soon! Check out their profiles on our website, sfspca.org 🐾

  • Our hearts are with everyone impacted by the devastating fires in Southern California. We want to do our part to help and that's why this morning, two vans loaded with donations and supplies rolled out to help Los Angeles shelters clear space for animals impacted by the wildfires. 💕 If you'd like to help, here are a few ways: 1. Adopt. 🐶 ALL PUPPIES in our shelter have their adoption fee waived for a limited time as we try to make room to bring back even more animals during this crisis. Share this with friends and family! 2. Foster. We need foster volunteers as we continue making space at our shelter, no prior trainings required! 👉 Sign up: https://lnkd.in/gTuQrysW --- Select "Don't have a login? Apply now." 3. Please support animal shelters, community services, and the hardworking front-line heroes in LA.

  • The impact of your support is lived out every day here at the SF SPCA. ☺️ One of those stories is Jake. He had been dealt a tough hand by the time he arrived at our shelter. His left leg needed to be amputated while he was with our partner shelter in Fresno due to a significant fracture to his thigh bone. Upon examining him further, our Shelter Medicine team realized his one “good” leg wasn’t so good! He also had a fracture on the femur of his right leg near his hip joint. The injuries Jake sustained were likely the result of being hit by a car. 😢 Fortunately, our Shelter Medicine team had seen this type of injury before and knew exactly what to do! After a successful surgery to his right leg, check-ups, and weeks of rehabilitation with a foster family who helped him walk again, Jake made a full recovery! 🎉 Today, Jake is living the good life as a tripod with his new dad, and it's all thanks to donors who support our work. 🙏 Please consider making a 3x matched donation today to help even more animals like Jake receive the happy ending they deserve: https://lnkd.in/gHmrvbHx

  • Leopard arrived with conjunctivitis, severely swollen eyelids, and an upper respiratory infection. Our Shelter Medicine team started treating his conditions, but were surprised to see that his eyes had actually gotten worse the next day. His eyes had crusted shut which could lead to permanent changes to his eyes, so our team switched tact. He needed several procedures to separate the eye tissue, plus weeks of continued treatment in foster, and it all paid off! Thanks to our awesome Shelter Medicine team and the dedication of our fosters, both of his eyes made a full recovery! Today, Leopard is a happy, healthy kitty living with his forever family, and we couldn't do it without the generosity of our supporters. Please consider making a 3x matched donation today to help even more animals like Leopard receive the second chances they deserve: https://lnkd.in/gHmrvbHx

  • We’re seeing a lot of animals’ dreams of a family come true as we’re waiving adoption fees for cats and dogs this holiday season. But there are so many other just-as-loveable pets who are still waiting in the shelter day after day. Seeing our animals look longingly at people passing by, especially long-time residents like Boba Fetch, is even harder during the holidays. That’s why your support is so vital this time of year. Whether it’s housing long-time residents for months or even a year, performing lifesaving surgery on a shelter cat, or providing access to veterinary care for a family who needs a little extra help, your donation will go the extra mile to help all of our animals in need. Make a donation today and your support will automatically double to go twice as far! Please consider contributing a direct gift here or visit our website, https://lnkd.in/g-KCFWCE. Thank you! 🐾

  • It’s Giving Tuesday and what better way to support than by helping animals find their forever home for the holidays. 🏠🐾❤️ It’s becoming harder to adopt out animals, especially adult dogs like Juno who has been waiting 263 days to find her family. With your help, we know Juno will get one of her own. Your gift will help cover the cost of waiving adoption fees for animals five months and older this holiday season, and will automatically be matched up to $100k to go twice as far. With waived adoptions, we hope that barrier no longer stands in the way of Juno being able to find her perfect match. 🌟 🩵 Donate today: https://bit.ly/3BbQ7ec Every donation, no matter how big or small, will support our mission. Thank you! 🙏 #GivingTuesday
