  • THE SHACKLETON MEDAL FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE POLAR REGIONS   Today, the 151st anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s birth on 15th February 1874, marks the launch of the 2025 Shackleton Medal for the Protection of the Polar Regions.   ‘Optimism is the true moral courage’  - Sir Ernest Shackleton   Now in its fourth year, this award is gaining increasing recognition and credibility around the world for its unique focus - to highlight the one person who is doing the most important and impactful work to help save the Polar regions from the myriad threats they face. Polar protection is a global priority: what happens at the poles impacts our entire planet and the nature and scale of these threats is becoming more apparent. There are reasons to be pessimistic, but that’s not in our nature. There is science to be done, people to persuade, advances to be made. The Shackleton Medal shines a light on the activists, scientists, explorers and communicators that are stepping forward to make a difference. A £10,000 prize and a hand-struck silver medal will be awarded to the person judged to have done the most to protect the polar regions so loved by The Boss.   The judging criteria reflect the character of Shackleton himself; we are looking to reward people who have shown courage, determination, ingenuity and leadership in their work. ‘Difficulties are just things to overcome after all’ - Sir Ernest Shackleton See our website for more information about the medal, our judges and previous Medal winners. Most importantly, we want you to get involved. Tell us who you think should be recognised by nominating them for a place on the longlist here: https://lnkd.in/eSKizgpf   By Endurance, We Conquer.   Martin Brooks. • “I finish the week reading that even if we limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, by the end of the century we will likely lose 90% of the glaciers in the Alps. The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Preservation and at Arctic Basecamp we’re joined by surprise guest Yo-Yo Ma who helps us to “perform hope for the glaciers”.” This year James Antarctic Meltdown Grecian has been chosen as Arctic Basecamp’s Scientist in Residence. He has just returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland where he was invited to ‘speak science to power.’ This incredible opportunity involved hosting briefings, discussing the latest climate science, and attending a range of key events. As we know, what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. The region is warming 4x faster than the global average, with effects rippling across our planet. It’s more urgent than ever to amplify the science and push for evidence-based action. 🧊🌍 Read James’ main takeaways from Davos and watch Yo-Yo Ma’s moving performance here: https://lnkd.in/ek3b-Db7 Durham University 📸: Arctic Basecamp ___ Rothera Down Jacket 850-fill power 90/10 RDS-certified goose down insulation bluesign® certified fabric 100% recycled Japanese ripstop shell fabric Ultra-lightweight 42g/m² fabric #Shackleton #LiveCourageously #Davos2025 #ArcticBasecamp #ClimateAction #ScienceToAction #PolarScience #Geography #DurhamUniversity

  • 52 days - 3,000 miles - 1 woman rewriting history Ananya Prasad (Atlantic Odyssey) has completed the World’s Toughest Row, becoming the first woman of colour to row solo across any ocean - and she did it in her own way. This wasn’t just a race; it was an odyssey of resilience. Through broken oars, a lost rudder, relentless waves, and the deep solitude of the Atlantic, Ananya met every challenge with determination and an unshakable spirit. She faced her fear of deep water, diving beneath her boat to clear barnacles from the hull, alone, thousands of miles from land and 5000m above the sea floor. She kept her cool during an encounter with orcas, made ingenious repairs to failed equipment and so much more. But she didn’t just survive - she thrived, making the most of every moment at sea, embracing the adventure rather than chasing the finish line. And in doing so, she finished second in the solo category - being the only woman. We first met Ananya a year and a half ago with zero nautical experience, she was determined and composed with a just touch of trepidation simmering below the surface. And just look at her now, a name in the record books. At Shackleton, we celebrate those who Live Courageously, to embrace the unknown, and to find strength in adversity. Ananya, you have epitomised that ethos, and thrown the door wide open to anyone considering pushing beyond their comfort zone. Congratulations on an historic achievement! Throughout this amazing adventure, Ananya is raising money for the Mental Health Foundation and the Deenabandhu Trust - if you are enjoying this adventure, please donate today at https://lnkd.in/eYEw8FkQ 🎥 : World's Toughest Row #Shackleton #LiveCourageously

YOUNGEST TO POLE // KAREN KYLLESØ   On January 13th, 2025 Karen Malena Kyllesø arrived at the bottom of the world, becoming the youngest person in history to ski solo to the South Pole.   At just 21 years old, Karen not only shattered the record, but also redefined expectations with determination, resilience, and incredible courage. Her epic unsupported journey saw her traverse over 1,133.65 kilometres of Antarctica’s harsh terrain, battling freezing temperatures, relentless winds, and the solitude of the polar expanse.   Carrying everything she needed to survive, Karen hauled a pulk weighing over 100kg (double her body weight), navigated towering sastrugi and skied for hours each day in whiteout conditions. Though her stoicism might not lead her to admit it, we believe it took immense bravery to face not only the physical challenges but also the mental demands of such an unforgiving environment.   Karen’s record-breaking feat is a testament to her willpower. Through considered preparation, mental strength and unwavering focus you can achieve the extraordinary. With the courage to push boundaries and redefine what’s expected of her, Karen has left a legacy that will inspire generations to come and truly embodies our mission to Live Courageously.   Congratulations, Karen - you’ve truly cemented your place in polar history! - Karen chose Shackleton as her polar expedition outfitter as we produced the first women's expedition pulk jacket and salopettes which, unlike the unisex editions often found, is designed and created by and for female polar explorers specifically.
