  • This year Sherpa embarked on an exercise in team building in the form of an engineering constructor challenge. https://lnkd.in/dY_hDKFX Two teams of engineers at Sherpa were tasked with designing, producing, procuring, and assembling a bike for the office that all employees can use around town. The teams were each given an antiquated Mt Bike frame and about 16 weeks to work together on design and manufacturing. We documented the entire process. Here is their story. #ElevatingEngineering  #constructorchallenge #bikedesign #mechanicalengineering #industrialdesign

Last Friday, Team Sherpa Design had a blast celebrating another successful year! Our casino night theme was fun-filled: card games, great food, and a raffle. All raffle tickets that did not win a prize were assigned a dollar value towards a charitable donation. Feeling blessed to work with such a great group of people 🎉

  • Industrial Design for Team Moab. Two Sherpa teams were tasked with creating a custom bicycle from a bike frame. The second design team received the theme of Moab. This theme inspired a wide range of desert design possibilities, emphasizing the rugged utilitarianism found in off-roading. Such a beautiful but harsh environment demands sleek functionality, so we took a more minimalist and pragmatic approach. Given that the end use was as a practical bike for employees to navigate around town, the team decided on a utilitarian design that incorporated elements of the Moab wilderness without being overly literal. The industrial design team played an advisory role, suggesting color schemes that reflected the landscape associated with the theme. This resulted in a matte, rust orange base color complemented by bright blue and contrasted with black accents. Next, the ID Team developed a wordmark which called on the image of the rising sun and evoked a mirage effect as the base of the logo. They went onto design a landscape for the main tube, utilizing a custom sticker to cut a silhouette that evoked Moab. The finished bike turned out great and is now widely in use at Sherpa Design. #industrialdesign #constructorchallenge #bikedesign #productdesign #productdevelopment

  • Industrial Design for Cargo Bike. Two Sherpa teams were each provided with a bike frame and a theme from which to create a custom bicycle. The cargo bike design was inspired by the theme of Everest, specifically the idea of Sherpas assisting with gear transportation to basecamp. For the industrial design, we began with a mood board centered around this theme. Naturally, the colors that stood out included the whites of the snow, but we also considered the vibrant hues of prayer flags for bold contrast. After creating concepts for the frame livery, we looked at various color combinations. We also developed a wordmark that gave the impression of mountainsides and forward momentum. Once the bike frame construction was finished, the Industrial Design Team assisted with spray painting and applying the wordmarks. We were all very happy with the final product and the bike is now in use and available to all employees at the Sherpa Design office. #industrialdesign #constructorchallenge #bikedesign #productdesign #productdevelopment

  • During the recent Sherpa bike design challenge, one of the features the engineers developed was a storage solution. They reviewed several location and construction options before pursuing a rear mounted, lightweight, storage box design. This would enable employees on outings to have adequate room for packing a lunch, or six pack, without the impeded visibility of a front mounted storage solution. They worked on a modular design that would complement the bike’s aesthetic theme and could interface to a rack with a custom taillight. They selected materials including a water-resistant waxed canvas exterior, a corrugated plastic structure, and a thermal foam lining for the interior to insulate the contents. The storage box was designed in NX and utilized exterior panels to reinforce the shape with a modern pattern. The panels were laser cut and assembled through a lamination process, with elastic loops secured through the base as connection points to the bike. The end result was a well-functioning and visually pleasing storage solution. #engineeringchallenge #bikedesign #constructorschallenge #mechanicalengineering #productdesign
