Machinery modifications are something most of us have had to deal with in our careers with Equipment manufacturers. In the following example JLG Industries letter 03/2021: Whom it may concern & Subject: Proximity Voltage Sensing Devices on JLG Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS). As clearly stated quote: "JLG MEWPs are not insulated and do not provide protection from contact or proximity to electrical current". end quote. However, to install such a device the modification must be certified in writing by the vendor, qualified engineer, or other certifying entity, to be at least as safe as the equipment was before the modification (per OSHA 1910.67 and 1926.453) for whatever application may be considered. Did you know humans have been shown to have problems identifying how far away from power lines they are due to depth perception issues? This is a well-established phenomenon. There have been reports written by human factor engineers that explain this going back to the 1970s. I believe this paper was written and published by Lorna Middendorf "Judging clearance distances near overhead power lines". Quote- "A clear need appears for crane safety devices such as proximity alarms, boom, and load line insulating devices to minimize the risk of dangerous contact with hazardous bare (uninsulated) energized high voltage power lines. Crane operators. flag men and others may not, foreseeably, be able to accurately judge safe clearances from power lines. Existing safe clearance standards, even revised standards can be expected to be compromised in normal work situations" end quote. Einstein and power line warning systems. Do you remember learning in high school science class that "all things are in motion"? This idea connects to some fascinating concepts in physics, especially when we talk about energy and Einstein's theory of relativity. Albert Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2E = mc^2E=mc2 shows how mass and energy are connected. Even objects that seem completely still, like a rock or a chair, actually have tiny particles inside them (atoms) that are constantly moving. These particles vibrate, rotate, and interact at the atomic level, giving everything an intrinsic "motion." Einstein’s theory of relativity also teaches us something remarkable: motion is relative. This means how we perceive the movement of an object depends on where we’re observing it from. It even affects how time and space behave for objects in motion—an idea that’s been proven through experiments and has practical applications in things like GPS technology. The Big Picture From the smallest particles to the largest galaxies, motion is everywhere. Atoms vibrate, energy flows, and even the universe itself is expanding. These movements, governed by physical laws, are fundamental to how the world works. They remind us that motion is a constant and essential part of existence. A Practical Example and Power line warning systems in general The concept of motion isn’t just theoretical—it has real-world applications. For instance, power line systems rely on the electric fields (E-fields) created by moving charges. These fields fluctuate at incredible speeds (far faster than humans can detect) and can be measured using a simple voltmeter and an AC power line. I bet you did not know that Proximity Alarms have been field-tested for reliability and repeatability back into the 1970s? For example here is a 1974 original copy from Grove Manufacturing field testing a Legacy Sigalarm with an RT75s telescoping crane. Barry Spangler himself performed the test with the following results.
