About us

In Norway today the value chain for wood in construction is largely linear. Our recycle centers receive about the same amount of discarded wood yearly as new wood used in construction nationally. The discarded wood is manly shredded and used for energy production. SirkTRE works to establish the fully circular value chain for wood in construction by accommodating for and showing good examples of products made form repurposed wood. The value chain includes mapping, planning, deconstruction and logistics, treatment including sorting, fusing, reformatting and new industrial use of repurposed wood. Both solid wood and wood chips will be preserved and repurposed in new constructions also following the growing trend of design for rebuilding.

Another European “daughter” project started this month. In the RAW project - an EIC Pathfinder Challenge project - Omtre is leading a work package in RAW. One of the objectives of SirkTRE (Global) is to help create more European and Norwegian research and innovation projects - to create more consciousness, capability and confidence in #woodcircularity. We are happy to see so many initiatives emerging. This is a real #indication that policy makers, public funders and researchers believe and trust in #woodcircularity as a way forward. Other European projects with SirkTRE partners: CIRCULess, WoodStock project, InnoTLT and Drastic SirkTRE is co-funded by Norges forskningsråd, SIVA and Innovation Norway.

Projektet hedder RAW: Computation For A New Age Of Ressource Awere Architecture: Waste-Sourced And Fast-Growing Bio-Based Materials. #ScientificPublicationAlert enhancing the reuse of structural timber in construction 🌍 Dag Pasca, Angelo Aloisio, Yuri De Santis, Hauke Burkart and Audun Øvrum published a paper about the science behind the Norwegian standards for wood reuse - supported by the Sirktre project. 🌿🏗️ 🔍 Timber, when dismantled, often shows signs of its previous life—think connector holes from screws or dowels, and paths for internal piping and cabling. These marks can weaken the wood's structural integrity. To address this, these researchers have introduced a groundbreaking visual-based method that classifies recycled timber by assessing the impact of these "scars." 📊 Leveraging a stochastic mechanics-based numerical model, they can now predict how these imperfections affect timber's bending strength. This model helps us create a robust dataset to train data-driven models that can swiftly determine the reduction in strength—crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency in timber reuse. 🤖 By employing machine learning and conditional classification models, they have achieved over 80% accuracy in identifying beams whose strength has diminished by more than 20%—a key threshold in structural grading. This simple yet effective method involves comparing the total diameters of holes in strategic beam areas to a predetermined threshold. 🏛️ This work not only supports better recycling practices but also bridges a crucial regulatory and methodological gap in the construction industry, promoting safer and more sustainable building methods. 🤝 Let’s build a more sustainable circular bio-based future together! #Sustainability #ConstructionTech #MachineLearning #TimberReuse #CircularEconomy #InnovationInConstruction #BuildingMaterials #SustainableDevelopment Reference and copyright image: Pasca, D.P., Aloisio, A., De Santis, Y., Burkart, H. and Øvrum, A., 2025.
