In the midst of my practicum requirement, I came across this article that beautifully underscores the power and significance of doula work. Doulas provide more than just support; they empower families, advocate for dignity, and bridge critical gaps in healthcare by offering culturally relevant care. Yet, as our work gains recognition, there's a shift toward data collection and evaluation by funding agencies. My practicum explores how doulas feel about these research and evaluation practices, especially the increasing demands for data. As I embark on my practicum, I am excited to share my findings as well as uplift work centering the doula workforce. https://lnkd.in/g-PYcvE6

Healthy Loving is Healthy Living
About us
Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, and with offices in South Africa, SisterLove, Inc.’s (SLI) mission is to eradicate the impact of HIV and sexual and reproductive oppression upon all women, their families, and communities locally and internationally. Established in 1989, SLI was the first organization in the US South to explicitly focus on the needs of Black women living with HIV (WLHIV) and other communities disproportionately impacted and least recognized in direct services, research, and advocacy in the HIV epidemic. SLI utilizes an interdisciplinary human rights, harm reduction, and Reproductive Justice (RJ) approach to its direct services (testing, counseling, sexuality education), community mobilization and support among WLHIV, its Policy and Advocacy Program (PAP), and research program.

As people with #HIV live longer, end-stage diseases of the kidney, liver, heart, and lung continue to rise. Today, HHS published a final rule that removes clinical research and institutional review board requirements for kidney and liver transplants between donors with HIV and recipients with HIV. This is an important step to increase the availability of life-saving organs for all patients, while also reducing barriers and stigma for people with HIV. Read the final rule, which further implements the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act, and was driven by a large body of evidence: https://lnkd.in/gJdAv7UX Whether you are living with HIV or not, registering as an organ donor can save lives. Everyone deserves a second chance of life. Go to OrganDonor.gov to sign up! #OrganDonation #HOPEinAction

Porsha Ngumezi should be alive today, but she was denied standard miscarriage care at a Texas hospital. Porsha is the fifth woman documented so far that has died because of abortion bans and restrictions. We cannot normalize this horrifying reality. https://gu.tt/3V2r8R9 #ReproductiveHealth #ReproductiveRights #AbortionRights

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Far too many trans people are targeted by the carceral system and caught in its vicious conditions. Behind bars, trans people face extremely high rates of harassment and physical and sexual assault, are frequently denied routine healthcare, and are at high risk of being sent to solitary confinement. While the central goal should be keeping LGBTQ people out of prison in the first place, far more needs to be done to ensure their safety behind bars, by preventing harassment and sexual assault, improving systems for addressing assault when it occurs, providing access to appropriate housing, health care, and clothing to incarcerated transgender people, and enacting and enforcing non-discrimination policies for staff. #incarceration #criminaljustice #transawareness

#TransAwarenessWeek ended yesterday, but the threat against the Trans community has not. Right now, there are over 650+ anti-trans bills across the US. Make no mistake. Weaponized legislation is violence. Thank you Human Rights Campaign for this important research that underscores the crisis we face and the need for direct action.
The senseless and infuriating violence against trans and gender-expansive people has claimed the lives of 36 people since 2023 Trans Day of Remembrance. Each one had a family, loved ones, and dreams, and each of them deserved to live fully and openly without fear. Our Epidemic of Violence report, launched annually on Trans Day of Remembrance, honors their lives. Since we started tracking this violence in 2013, we’ve recorded at least 372 violent deaths. We remain committed to combating anti-trans stigma, bias, hate, and discrimination: https://lnkd.in/e2iR-Sdd
