  • The status quo is to teach personal finance, but if you really want to be empowered, understanding basic economics leads to managing finances effectively. By grasping how our economic system operates, we can make informed decisions about our money and optimize its use for a better financial future. Kids deserve to learn this! At Skillabration, skills are a celebration, and financial literacy is one of our pillars. • In Season 2, Episode 1 of the Skillabration Podcast we're discussing financial literacy and what exactly makes a lasting currency. This can be something new and interesting to discuss with your kids. In fact, you could even make a game out of it. Whenever I play games in class, they're usually pretty simple, but still a lot of fun. Students like guessing games, so that's one you could do to share the keys to a lasting currency with them. For example: Guess how many traits it takes to make a lasting currency (3, 5, or 7). Students also enjoy matching games and sequencing. So, after learning the keys to a lasting currency you could cut up paper strips to have them sort the terms with the definitions. Again, it sounds simple, but my students always enjoy it! To put a twist on it, you could put a time limit on the activity. #HistoryOfMoney #Civilization #Economics

  • If you're an entrepreneur, I'm sure you can relate to having different iterations of your business. For those that are new here, I'm a former public school teacher. I worked in a public school setting from 2005-2016 as a bilingual middle school teacher and a high school Spanish teacher. After a lot of thought and consideration, I realized the only way I was going to make a genuine impact on students had to be done outside of the system. After resigning in 2016, I started out self-employed. Since I was bilingual, I had a background in both English as a second language and Spanish. With those skills, I became an independent contractor working for companies based in China and Taiwan. I taught English to both children and adults. It was an amazing experience. To make ends meet, I also tutored students locally in a variety of subjects ranging from Spanish to reading and writing. I interpreted at local medical facilities as well. However, teaching students in China became the most lucrative because I could also recruit teachers and earn a bonus. Not only that, but it was a very fun and rewarding job. Since I became successful as both a teacher and a recruiter, I ended up creating an online course and coaching program that helped other teachers learn the ins and outs of creating an online teaching business. I established my LLC in 2019. Sadly, this industry eventually shut down due to some changes in Chinese law that forbade foreign teachers to work with students in China. I had to pivot in 2021. I started teaching Spanish online. I created a highly successful Spanish class for middle school students and I realized I needed a team of teachers. That's how Skillabration was created. Now we not only offer Spanish, but also French, Mandarin, Cantonese and American Sign Language! #SelfEmployment #Teacherpreneur #TeachingOnline #EntrepreneurialJourney
