SMART AGRIBUS Sets to Partner with IFAD through the SAPZ Program to Lead the Way in Food Sustainability Today, SMART AGRIBUS was honored to participate in the SAPZ FGN/IFAD Program Supervision Mission. Our Director, Ridwan Adebisi, reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to empowering youths and women in agriculture. Through this vital initiative, we are focused on strengthening food sustainability by boosting agricultural productivity and promoting agribusiness opportunities for young Nigerians. Building on the recent successes of youth clusters in Minjibir and Makole under the AGRIHUB NIGERIA project by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)/IITA, we are confident that redeploying our “SMART MODEL” will drive significant progress in youth-led agricultural productivity and food security, both at the state and national levels. Our goal remains clear: to equip and inspire young people to become active contributors to Nigeria's sustainable food future. We are inspired by the dedication of IFAD’s country director Mrs. Dede Ekoue and her ongoing efforts to boost productivity by investing in youth and women in agriculture. We’re also thrilled to see this mission supported by incredible partners and industry leaders like ICRISAT, CDA, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), and many others. With strong collaboration, we can empower our youths, support women in agribusiness, and make great strides towards a sustainable food system in Nigeria. #SmartAgriBus #AGRIHUB #IFAD #SAPZ #YouthEmpowerment #FoodSustainability #Agribusiness #Agriculture #Partnerships #ICRISAT #IITA #CDA #Sasakawa #InnovationInAgriculture

Yesterday was a day of fulfillment as we visited the youth beneficiaries of the AGRIHUB NIGERIA project, funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) , in Minjibir (Wasai). On our monitoring, evaluation and learning tour, we witnessed firsthand how the youths, supported by SMART AGRIBUS in collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) , have not only benefitted from loan support but also maximized the value of their trainings. Their results speak volumes. With support of approximately NGN 300,000, these youths collaboratively have currently harvested produce worth over a million naira (millet & cowpea), with sorghum still in the field. From their meticulous records, they’ve achieved a profit margin of over 200%. This also reinforces the effectiveness of our "Smart model" which consistently delivers over 80% recovery in such interventions- they are ready to pay back. Partners such as ICRISAT , Centre for Dryland Agriculture CDA, IAR, and @Self-help Africa were present to witness this success. SMART AGRIBUS , in collaboration with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) , is proud to have played a key role in implementing this project. Together, we are making real progress toward #foodsecurity and #youthempowerment. With more partnerships and support from organizations like International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Mastercard Foundation, we can scale this model further, reaching more communities and creating #sustainable impact. The synergy of collaboration is the key to breaking the chains of food #insecurity across Nigeria and #Africa. This is just the beginning, and we are laying a solid foundation for future projects to build on. I believe tailored training like that to be facilitated by Dr. Victor Afari-Sefa in Dec will strengthen us to do better. #AGRIHUBNigeria #SmartAgriBus #FoodSecurity #YouthEmpowerment #SustainableAgriculture #IFAD #WFP #ISDB #Mastercard #IITA #AFDB #Collaboration #Agribusiness #Impact

Last night was a truly memorable one, filled with a deepened sense of purpose and a renewed enthusiasm for agricultural development. I had the distinct honor of being invited as the lead in Smart AgriBus to the dinner hosted by ICRISAT Nigeria in honor of Dr. Victor Afari-Sefa, Global Research Program Director ( ICRISAT). The gathering brought together esteemed leaders in the agricultural landscape, including Dr. Godwin Atser . (Country Director of Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA)), Prof. Gaya and Prof. Amina of the Center for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) at BAYERO UNIVERSITY, KANO , Hon. Abdullahi Bashir, Madam Victoria Idenyi (Country Admin of ICRISAT), Dr. Ignatius Angarawai (Country Representative of ICRISAT Nigeria), Alhaji Ibrahim Garba (KSADP State Coordinator), and Dr. Farouq Karuwa (Managing Director of KNARDA). It was humbling to be among these industry giants, and the evening was a powerful reminder of the vital role collaboration plays in driving sustainable agricultural solutions. As a proud partner and ‘daughter’ of ICRISAT as well as a living testimony of their tremendous efforts, SMART AGRIBUS remains committed to fostering youth-led agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship. • It is a great joy to see farmers actively interested in purchasing quality seeds, especially when many of these farmers are youths and women. Such enthusiasm was evident at the recent Seed & Input Fair hosted by beneficiaries of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) AGRIHUB Project in Kano. The fair was organized by International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Syngenta Foundation, and SMART AGRIBUS. The enthusiasm of the youths trained under the IFAD AGRIHUB Project, sponsored by IFAD and managed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), was inspiring. These young farmers showed a keen interest in purchasing high-quality seeds, promising not only better yields but also sustainable agribusiness practices. Profits from improved yields will motivate these young farmers to view farming as a viable and profitable business. Their exemplary diligence made it possible for IITA, the Syngenta Foundation, and Smart AgriBus to collaborate on this fair under the AVISA & SEED EQUAL project. The farming communities of Makole and Minjibir particularly benefited from this initiative. The chairman of the Dawakiji Local Government Area commended their efforts and proposed closer engagements to unlock further opportunities for them. Additionally, the two communities were promised demonstrations to practically showcase the efficacy of improved seed varieties over local ones, helping farmers appreciate the benefits of using high-quality seeds and further enhancing their agricultural productivity. Together, we make the food system sustainable through quality and climate- smart seeds. #Agriculture #YouthInAgriculture #SustainableFarming #IFAD #IITA #SyngentaFoundation #SmartAgriBus #SeedFair #Agribusiness #FarmingCommunities #Kano

    Driving commitment to sustainable agriculture

Did you know that certain companion plant combinations can increase crop yields by up to 50% and significantly reduce the need for chemical pesticides? This natural gardening technique not only boosts plant health but also promotes ecological balance, making it a game-changer for sustainable agriculture. Companion planting is a gardening technique that holds immense potential for enhancing the health and productivity of plants in a natural and sustainable manner. By strategically pairing certain plant species together, gardeners can unlock a myriad of benefits such as pest control, improved soil fertility, and increased yields. This method taps into the inherent synergies between plants, creating a harmonious ecosystem that fosters growth and resilience. The essence of companion planting lies in the thoughtful selection of plant companions based on their complementary traits and interactions. Some plants emit compounds that repel pests, while others attract beneficial insects or contribute nutrients to the soil, enriching neighboring plants. Here are some effective combinations of companion plants: 🌱Tomatoes and Basil 🌱Corn, Beans, and Squash (Three Sisters) 🌱Lettuce and Carrots 🌱Marigolds and Vegetables 🌱Potatoes and Beans 🌱Radishes and Spinach 🌱Roses and Garlic 🌱Broccoli and Dill 🌱Eggplant and Thyme 🌱Strawberries and Borage 🌱Peppers and Oregano 🌱Cabbage and Celery 🌱Onions and Carrots 🌱Beets and Bush Beans 🌱Kale and Chives 🌱Spinach and Strawberries 🌱Cauliflower and Chamomile 🌱Brussels Sprouts and Sage 🌱Squash and Catnip 🌱Asparagus and Tomatoes 🌱Cilantro and Peas 🌱Melons and Radishes 🌱Carrots and Sage 🌱Beans and Summer Savory 🌱Lettuce and Chives While companion planting requires some experimentation and adaptation, the rewards of healthier plants and increased yields make it a compelling approach for sustainable gardening practices. Harness the power of companion planting to cultivate flourishing gardens that are both productive and environmentally friendly.
