French Immersion Preschool located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

About us

At Smith Street Maternelle, we provide a unique French immersion preschool program grounded in the fundamentals of progressive education and experiential learning. As such, our environment and curriculum are dynamic, age-appropriate, and deeply connected to the children's lives and experiences. Our teachers are experts in nurturing a child's social, emotional, intellectual, and linguistic development. We hope to engender a lifelong love of learning, drive to explore, and ability to relate to and empathize with other people. Essential components of our curriculum include art, block-building, sensory experiences, dramatic play, music, movement, and gross motor activities, and (mini) field trips.

Les bibliothécaires de la Petite Section at Smith Street Maternelle au travail! These 3-year-old students are responsible for returning and exchanging books from their classroom to the communal school library at our Gowanus campus in Brooklyn. They are sorting, matching, working on one-to-one correspondence, and even understanding genre through the color coded categories of books. Above all, they are learning that reading and interacting with books is one of life’s greatest pleasures. One of the things we think a lot about at Smith Street is the breadth and depth of what young children are capable of doing. Inspired by Maria Montessori, we believe education should nurture responsible, independent, and productive children who understand that what they do is important, and other people are counting on them. So, our 3-year-olds run the library, bien sûr. #progressiveeducation #learnbydoing #frenchimmersion #écolematernelle #brooklynpreschool
