  • Flashback to our event, ‘Social Media, Business Models, and the Promotion of Extremism and Zero-Sum Mindsets’ moderated by Ed Snider Center Managing Director Jacqueline Manger and Professor Rellie Derfler-Rozin. We learned that misinformation campaigns, hate speech and bots are just a few ways that social media business models promote extremism. Distinguished panelists Paul Barrett, Joel Finkelstein, Barnett Koven, and Balaji Padmanabhan provided  thought-provoking discussion. We hope you enjoyed their insights into the complex intersections of social media, business, and society. Thanks to all who joined us!

  • This past Tuesday, we hosted UNDIVIDE US Movie mastermind Ben Klutsey, also Executive Director of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University for a special movie screening and Q&A. The documentary explores America's toxic polarization—exposing media and political tactics that fuel division—while highlighting hope through intimate conversations across three cities. "UNDIVIDE US" reveals the empathy and resilience that can bridge divides in today’s fractured society. Thank you to all who attended this special event! #UndivideUs #FilmScreening #Pluralism #CivilExchange

  • Congratulations to Shotaro Yamaguchi from our UMD PhD program in Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship for winning the prestigious Nancy S. and Edward F. Ebert Graduate Award in Free Enterprise! Shotaro, who started the Smith PhD Program in Fall 2018, holds a BS and MS in Commerce & Management from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan. His groundbreaking research focuses on innovation and mobility during Japan's industrialization, specialized human capital, and the impact of non-compete agreements on firm and worker outcomes. When he's not diving into his research, Shotaro enjoys exploring new technologies and is an avid fan of classical Japanese literature. #UMDProud #ResearchExcellence #Innovation #FreeEnterprise #PhDAchievement 🔗 Personal Website: https://lnkd.in/dPzXBkpp

  • Sarah Wolek - congratulations on time well spent at UMD! The Ed Snider Center was a big part of that journey when Christina Elson, then Managing Director, learned about your fledgling Intentional Life Lab and gave you a platform for your work. As a Center that researches enterprise and markets and teaches that enterprise begins with the individual, your work paired well with our existing curriculum "Creating a Purposeful Life and Career." Under the guidance and mentorship of Rajshree Agarwal, the Lab and your creative curriculum was incubated and win/win partnerships with amazing faculty like Rellie Rozin were established. Advised in that work by Jacqueline Manger, MBA and supported by Ed Snider staff Joyce Koo, Caitlin Romeo and many others at Maryland-Smith, we all say... job well done. We wish you well in your continued journey to make the world around you a better place by leveraging your abilities and following your aspirations. Hopefully your positive influence outside of UMD will make it easier for those inside of UMD who continue the important work of helping the next generation to be purposeful problem solvers who with self-determination make their world a better place while creating fulfilling lives for themselves.

I came to University of Maryland seven years ago to teach a one-credit course. One class led to another....and here I am just now leaving this amazing institution. As I wrap-up, I could probably spend several class lectures discussing everything that I took away from this experience as well listing all the people who I connected with doing this work over the years, but here I will just share my gratitude. My classes were about self-leadership, purposeful work, contemplation, and building a meaningful life, and through them, I got to know my students on a personal level. I am deeply grateful that they showed up authentically, engaged fully, were present, creative, and kind. Working with them has further clarified my own purpose and helped me become a better human. This time in the classroom has been an amazing gift. I also have deep gratitude for my colleagues across campus and beyond who supported me. I showed up a passionate outsider to academia, excited to build new types of classes, followed a very unorthodox path into teaching, and they were here for it. Thank you for your collaboration throughout this time and for the opportunity to create curriculum and teach. This of course is not goodbye. I am already being roped into adjuncting an asynchronous course, guest lecturing, etc so I will remain engaged. I have been a student, an alumna, staff and faculty at UMD so "Once a Terp, Always a Terp!" 👇 Thanks also to the UMD Women's Basketball Team for honoring me as Faculty Member of the Game this semester! It was a wonderful way to conclude this part of my professional journey.
