We are delighted to announce the release of the December 2024 edition of the WIOMSA Newsbrief! 📰 As we wrap up the year, this issue showcases important advancements in marine conservation throughout the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). A key highlight is the election of new country coordinators by WIOMSA members, which enhances the organizational strength of our association. This edition features impactful Seagrass Workshops in Zanzibar, where experts came together to improve seagrass management—crucial for maintaining ecosystem health. We also highlight the inaugural National Marine Biodiversity Symposium in Madagascar, which generated essential discussions on safeguarding marine ecosystems while fostering economic development. Furthermore, we discuss ongoing efforts in Marine Spatial Planning, spearheaded by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management in collaboration with WIOMSA and the Nairobi Convention Secretariat. Environmental organizations can increase the impact and reach of their behavioral interventions by leveraging social networks and collective influence. We offer some insights on how to do that in our new paper "Reframing conservation audiences from individuals to social beings". This special issue of the Society for Conservation Biology’s journal Conservation Biology, Diversifying Voices in Conservation, includes a new paper by Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and CBC visiting scientist Dr. Alex Moore. This paper centers queer Black conservationists whose names, faces, and narratives have been excluded from history. In 2018, a few colleagues and I got together and formed a task force to study how to advance the inclusion of different disciplines into conservation and the Society for Conservation Biology. It turned into a multi-year, multi-study project with 16 contributors. Six years later our two publications are out in a special issue of conservation biology that I co-edited on diverse voices in conservation. One article looks at disciplinary inclusion in SCB and the other is a framework for how to increase disciplinary inclusion in organizations (membership societies, companies, etc.). I am so proud of this work and hope it helps advance disciplinary diversity and inclusion and epistemic justice so that we can continue to advance effective and ethical conservation solutions. 🚨 New papers on including social sciences in conservation!🚨 There's now widspread agreement that the social sciences are key to conservation science. But are social scientists actually included in the field of conservation? And what can conservation organizations do to include social scientists and the science we do? Six and a half years after starting the Disciplinary Inclusion Task Force and many hours of working with fantastic colleagues, today, we published two papers to answer these questions in Conservation Biology: https://lnkd.in/grCF2Uiy, https://lnkd.in/gKkrnpZn. Through a case study of The Society for Conservation Biology, document analyses, and surveys, these papers show that while biologists see conservation organizations as equitable and inclusive, social scientists and people from marginalized backgrounds do not. We outline recommendations (https://lnkd.in/grCF2Uiy) and create an epistemic justice framework (https://lnkd.in/gKkrnpZn) to show how conservation organizations can include the more diverse disciplines necessary to address today's conservation challenges.
