Who likes extra credit? (That was a trick question: we know most of our community does.) If you're already planning on attending #SLAS2025, consider adding on a day or two to your trip to attend a pre-conference Short Course. These popular, intensive and interactive courses are designed to provide you with a new tool in your life sciences and lab automation toolkit. Each half- and full-day course is diverse in scope; this year’s topics include liquid handling, 3D printing, phenotypic screening, python and more. We can't guarantee a perfectly sunny and warm trip -- January in San Diego can be unpredictable -- but we can guarantee you walk away with a new or enhanced skill. Early bird registration rates are in effect; register early because some courses will sell out! https://lnkd.in/eQ2zfj_X.

Ramisa Fariha, PhD realized she had a significant role to fulfill in the STEM field. “I had people reaching out to me, saying, ‘We were able to take a step forward because you took the first step.’ What drives me in life sciences, in STEM, is first, making certain that minority voices are heard, and that minority representation takes place,” Fariha says. “And second, we need to make certain that we’re not just merely doing a good job of recruiting, but also retaining people. I think understanding DEI doesn’t typically mean you’re only fighting for your race or your kind.” Fariha reunites with other members of an SLAS diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) panel held at SLAS2024 to share thoughts on ally support in the workplace. Along with fellow panel members Brandon Miller and J. Colin Cox, PhD, Fariha encourage life sciences professionals to be willing to challenge situations that don’t support the rights of others, and to know when to ask for guidance surrounding DEI topics.
