Public perceptions of Microbes Recent research highlights how little is known about public perceptions of micro-organisms and microbiomes. This makes it difficult to develop tailored messaging. This study concludes that non-microbial interests, such as an interest in health and wellness, may lead to acquisition of microbial knowledge and that people want scientists to share microbial messages preferably on platforms like social media. Additionally, this research identified that confusion about microbial terms is often accompanied by a desire to understand human-centric benefits of microorganisms and microbiomes. It is suggested that microbiologists partner with science communicators to develop microbial messaging, capitalizing on connections to non-microbial interests and appealing to people’s microbial worldview. How the Microbiome opens the way for Healthy Food and Sustainable Innovations Did you know that the microbiome plays a crucial role in both our health and sustainable agricultural practices? My latest research explores how food and healthcare professionals view the microbiome as a bridge between “Back to Nature” principles and technological innovation. Healthy eating is becoming increasingly important, but how does the microbiome fit this picture? What do experts see as the potential role of the microbiome in a healthier future? In a series of interesting conversations with experts - from farmers to dieticians, from the field to healthcare practices - I explore these key questions: - Can the microbiome bridge the gap between agriculture and health? - Is the microbiome driving a paradigm shift towards an ecosystem approach to health and nutrition? - How do my interviewees perceive the microbiome shaping the future of farming, food, and health? I'm currently working on a paper that provides answers to these questions, and hopefully, a first publication will be out soon.
