Informative and impassioned conversations last week at Portfolio Summits, where Sonen's David Hood led and participated on panels intended to guide advisor on the investment trends going into 2025.
The afternoon sessions at the Fiduciary Investor West Summit 2024 were packed with thought-provoking discussions, setting the stage for smarter decision-making in 2025: A conversation on The OCIO and the Client, moderated by David Hood (Sonen Capital LLC), provided a behind-the-scenes look at the evolving OCIO industry. Bert Feuss (Community Capital Advisors) and Issac Vaughn (Silicon Valley Community Foundation) shared candid stories about navigating partnerships between OCIOs and in-house teams, offering strategies for mitigating risk and strengthening collaboration. Next, Daniel Hennessy, CFA, CAIA (NEPC, LLC) led an engaging panel on Alternative Investments in 2025. Colin Murfit, CFA (Alan Biller and Associates) and Gary Watts, CFP®, EA (Wealth Enhancement Group) debated the sustainability of alternative strategies, weighing liquidity concerns, fees, and performance against the backdrop of market uncertainty. The conversation heated up during the Navigating ESG panel, featuring Dan Chu (Sierra Club Foundation), David Hood (Sonen Capital), and Craig Ayers, CFA (Whittier Trust Company). The panel tackled the polarizing nature of ESG investments today, addressing political pushback and how firms are adapting their portfolios in response. The summit closed with a forward-looking panel on Global Markets, Strategies, and Risk. Jack Janasiewicz, CFA (Natixis Investment Managers) moderated as Travis Simon, CFA (Mercer) and Sudharshan Murugesu (Partners Capital) explored strategies for managing global conflict, political shifts, and economic uncertainty, offering invaluable advice on navigating 2025’s unpredictable terrain. The day wrapped up with a lively Networking Happy Hour by Rithm Capital, where attendees reflected on the insights gained and continued building meaningful connections. Thank you to all who participated in building community within the fiduciary investment industry this year! #PortfolioSummits #Fiduciary #Investor #WestCoast #Investmentmanagement #InvestmentStrategies

With themes like “Boldness,” “Brightness,” and “Madness,” this years #ImpactWeek in Bilbao was intended to symbolize a transformative journey towards addressing pressing global challenges. During the event, Sonen Capital’s Founding Partner Raul Pomares, joined a panel to discuss “An Integrated Finance Approach to Solve Water Crisis”. The conversation was centered on increasing water demands and investment solutions to address unstable water access. Specifically, Pomares highlighted the importance of prioritizing water issues through a diverse range of financial strategies, such as the use of green bonds and real assets investments to restore valuable watersheds and ecosystems, local government bonds to manage storm runoff and sewage infrastructure, and a variety of innovative solutions in private equity and listed equities. Raul’s insights reflected Sonen Capital’s commitment to comprehensive solutions by fostering cross-sector collaboration and focusing on a systems change, rather than a piece-by-piece approach to ensure equitable access for all. Fellow panelists included: Ana Klarić with Commonland Daniel Valenzuela with Pioneers of Our Time Facundo Etchebehere with Ambition Loop Marta del Castillo with Social Nest Foundation #impactinvesting

The Americas Partnership Investor Network event, hosted by Endeavor Miami, was in part a celebration and partner-and-investment showcase to highlight the networks unifying goals to unlock and increase early-stage investment in Latin America and the Caribbean. Sonen’s Founding Partner, Raul Pomares was part of the evening’s keynote panel that discussed the region’s sectors and trends, entrepreneurial ecosystem, and how to work together to scale investment. Speaking about the most effective way to scale, Raul stated, “In this room, we are fortunate to have visionary investors. However, to truly address this challenge, we must focus on education and collaboration to engage the broader mainstream investor community. Without their participation, we risk missing the opportunity to achieve the partnership’s objectives and drive meaningful change throughout Latin America.” The APIN is an initiative established by Uruguay, Canada, and the United States under the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity, and it aims to boost entrepreneurial investment and awareness about the region’s opportunities and potential. Today, the Network has grown to include 26 investors with $1.5 billion committed to investing in Latin America and the Caribbean through 2030—momentum that underscores the power of collaboration to create lasting impact.
