About us
Founded by Michael Feinstein in 2007, the Great American Songbook Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Grammy affiliated non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the music of the Great American Songbook. The "Great American Songbook" is the canon of the most important and influential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century. These popular and enduring songs, created for Broadway theatre, musical theatre and Hollywood musical film between the 1920s and 1950s, are often referred to as “American standards”. The Foundation is committed to perpetuating this music and its history via initiatives to preserve the physical artifacts of the Songbook's creators, performers and publishers, and by making these cultural treasures accessible through intergenerational programming that focuses on interactive, educational and immersive experiences for all ages. We're celebrating the #ArchivesHashtagParty! Every month, the US National Archives selects a specific hashtag, and libraries and archives from around the country post photos and documents related to the theme. This month, we are focusing on #ArchivesOnTheRoad by highlighting our team and our traveling exhibits out and about, as well as specific items that deal with being on the road! Check out this episode of 'In The Archives with Michael Feinstein' to learn more about the life of artists on the road: https://lnkd.in/g5ENctay...

How did you celebrate #FallHatMonth? Besides music and archival collections, the Songbook Library & Archives is also home to a variety of costumes, including two notable hats: one owned by Bing Crosby and another by Jimmy Durante. Visitors can sometimes see these hats on archives tours and in displays. Both hats are stored with archival tissue paper under them to help keep their shape and style. Image 1: A herringbone-patterned trilby hat and brown wood smoke pipe owned by Bing Crosby . Image 2: A brown trilby adorned with a small ribbon owned by Jimmy Durante . A handwritten note beside the hat reads, "2 Hats. Steve Madrick's Cocoa Brown Hat was given to dad by Jimmy Durante when he performed with Les Brown Band."

Today, we celebrate Bessie Smith (1894-1937), who lived unapologetically and authentically as a Black queer woman of the early 20th century. As the "Empress of the Blues," her career cultivated a discography of 160 recorded songs which explores themes of independence, womanhood, sexual freedom, poverty, and racism. Smith's music was a proud reflection of herself. She maintained romantic relationships with men and women, frequented the queer night scenes in the cities where she performed, and fought tooth and nail to demand respect in segregated America. This Bisexual Visibility Day, the Foundation honors Bessie Smith's contribution to the Great American Songbook and invites you to share her legacy. #greatamericansongbook #bisexualvisibilityday #songbook #history
