Weather balloons that collect 1000x more data

About us

Sorcerer builds weather balloons that fly for over six months, collecting 1000x more data per dollar and reaching previously inaccessible regions. We use this data to train AI models that are up to 50% more accurate than today’s best forecasts

Sorcerer (YC S24) builds weather balloons that can fly for over six months, reach previously inaccessible regions, and collect 1000x more data per dollar than current systems. Every day, massive amounts of weather data are gathered from satellites, ground stations, airplanes, and weather balloons. On-site observations are crucial but very costly— the US National Weather Service alone spends over a billion dollars annually on these systems. Despite this, there are still areas where forecasts are uncertain. A shortage of weather stations over oceans and the global south has left 80% of the world with inadequate or nonexistent weather forecasting. Founded by Maxmillion McLaughlin, Alessandro Vecchi, and Austin Tindle, Sorcerer is launching a global network of long-lasting weather balloons to gather real-time data from hard-to-reach places. Each balloon stays in the air for over six months, making about 30 trips around the world and covering altitudes from sea level to 65,000 feet. They're able to collect 1000x more data per dollar and use this data to train AI models that improve forecast accuracy by up to 50%. Congrats to the team on the launch! 🎈 https://lnkd.in/gKVdqxHc

Founder & CEO @Sorcerer (YC S24) | Building weather balloons that collect 1000x more data

Many of you already know, but it's time for me to share some bittersweet news: at the end of June, I'll be leaving SumUp after nearly four years to go full-time on a startup of my own. The last year has been the most stressful, challenging, and most importantly *fun* time in my career. I've loved every minute of working with my colleagues and friends in the US and abroad, and I'm extremely excited about what this team will accomplish in the very near future. I'll be cheering you all on from the sidelines! I'm leaving to lead Sorcerer as co-founder and CEO. At Sorcerer, we're building toward something very simple: the world's most accurate climate and weather data everywhere. Right now, only 15% of the world has accurate and reliable weather forecasts. As climate change drives more extreme weather and historical data becomes less useful, this massive gap becomes more painful. We need better tools to help mitigate and adapt to our changing climate, and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of building those solutions. https://lnkd.in/gYBXidiN https://sorcerer.earth/ #sumupmadewithlove #climatetech
