About us

Sound Transit is transforming how the Central Puget Sound region moves by planning, building and operating regional transit systems that give millions of riders an alternative to sitting in traffic. As the agency prepares for nearly a million new Central Puget Sound residents by 2040, transit services are expanding to meet today’s growing needs. Thanks to voter approval of the largest mass transit expansion in the region’s history, Sound Transit’s light rail system will grow to four times the size it is today. When complete, the 116-mile light rail system will stretch from Everett to Tacoma and connect major job and population centers in Seattle including South Lake Union, Seattle Center, Ballard and West Seattle. It will also extend east to Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah and Mercer Island. As Sound Transit grows, we seek innovative, technical and creative professionals who are ready to come on board and make a difference. Career opportunities include information technology, finance, construction management and engineering positions. Apply today at www.soundtransit.org/jobs.

  • Yesterday, Sound Transit’s Blacks Empowering Success in Transit Employee Resource Group (BEST) raised the Pan-African flag in honor of Black History Month—a powerful emblem of resilience, unity, and self-determination. As it soared, so did our collective commitment to truth, justice, and the legacy of those who paved the way. Black history isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s about shaping the future. The day's events also featured the singing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in front of Union Station, immediately followed by employees gathering in the Ruth Fisher Boardroom to hear about Black activism in transit with Elmer Dixon. Thank you to everyone who stood in solidarity. ♥️🖤💚 A video of the flag raising can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gACaUzSz

  • Transit Equity Day is celebrated on February 4th, in honor of civil rights activist Rosa Parks’ birthday. While unequal access to transportation persists to this day, Sound Transit is helping transform our region by creating greater access to opportunity, and more affordable housing through transit-oriented development. Our expanding transit system provides living wage jobs during construction and operation, affordable connections to work, food, health care, entertainment and the essentials of everyday life, on trains sustainably powered by electricity. On Transit Equity Day 2025, Sound Transit employees recommit to leading our region's mobility transformation in a way that honors the legacy of Rosa Parks, renews our commitment to make public transit accessible and affordable, and continues to connect more people to more places to make life better and create equitable opportunities for all.

The new 1 Line station on NE 130th St is officially named Pinehurst Station! After robust public engagement and an internal station name evaluation, “Pinehurst Station” emerged as the top choice, and the name was approved by the Sound Transit Board. Starting in 2026, Pinehurst Station will serve the growing residential neighborhood between Northgate and Shoreline South/148th Street stations. The project includes pedestrian and bicycle connections, bus stops at the 130th/5th Avenue intersection, a dedicated paratransit drop-off area, a passenger vehicle drop-off area, and incredible station artwork developed by Seattle-based artist, Romson Bustillo. • 2024 Openings: Powering Progress with Partners Opening 12 stations in five cities was no easy feat, but with the help of our partners and support of the community, we made 2024 an unforgettable year. On April 27th, Sound Transit opened eight stations on the 2-Line, introducing light rail to East King County and connecting Bellevue and Redmond. On August 30th, we expanded the existing 1 Line North into Snohomish County with four new stations in Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood. With new openings planned for 2025, we have many reasons to celebrate the most ambitious transit expansion in the country. MLK Day at Garfield High School! Sound Transit in force! We had the pure joy of engaging with the local community at the Opportunity Fair organized by Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County (thank you Marleny Monterrozo). We spoke of opportunities, services, and our great expansion projects creating equity through access of all the resources one needs to succeed in life! We also had the joy of partnering with King County Metro Transit's Transit Ambassadors! Continuing on the synergy and collaboration with one of our most important partners! The overwhelming positive energy easily makes this my favorite event of the year and I plan on being a part of this one way or another for years to come. Thank you Thien Phan, RaeLani V., Mark Shelton, William Paaga, Gwen McCullough, Keshia O., Anne Porter, Lei Weeks, Christiana Hanes, PMP, Doug Wolfe, Gill Sobers-Outlaw, Simon Tan and the construction manager extraordinaire Michael Hall for being a part of the Sound Transit crew who made this a huge win for equity and inclusion. #mlk #mlkday #seattlemlkdaymarch #soundtransit #kingcountymetro

  • Last weekend, we paused service to Downtown stations for critical work on the Overhead Contact System (OCS), which powers our electric light rail vehicles. This work supports the East Link Extension and ensures smooth, reliable connections for our vehicles. While planned disruptions are part of expanding a transit network, our incredible Sound Transit Ambassadors were on hand to help riders navigate the changes. Thank you for your patience as we work to connect more people to more places safely and efficiently!
