New historical novel sheds light on women's experiences during Partition Natasha Sharma's "Beneath Divided Skies" explores the often-overlooked gendered impact of the 1947 Partition of India. The novel highlights how the well-intentioned Rescue and Restoration Act of 1947 ultimately denied agency to the very women it aimed to help. An estimated 33,000 Hindu and Sikh women were abducted in Pakistan, and 21,000 Muslim women in India during this tumultuous period. Women faced disproportionate violence and loss of rights during the conflict. Sharma's novel uses 'phulkari' embroidery as a motif to bring Punjab's culture alive, adding to the growing body of work by women authors documenting Partition experiences. This powerful work of historical fiction reminds us of the importance of preserving these stories for future generations. It's a timely reflection on women's agency and collective humanity in today's polarized world.
