Updates

  • Construction crews on the Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge, between Pierre and Fort Pierre, have faced significant challenges due to the cold weather. With warmer temperatures this week, construction crews have been working on removing the inner diaphragms between the main girders on the old bridge. Once complete, the main girders will be all that remains of the superstructure on the old bridge. Additional focus has been directed to removing curbs, gutters, and asphalt on Dakota Avenue north of the City of Pierre water treatment plant to make room for the 12-foot-wide concrete access path that will be used for service vehicles to gain access to the new bridge. #SDDOT #SD511

  • Beginning Monday, March 3, 2025, an eastbound lane closure will be put in place on Interstate 90 at the bridge over Bull Creek near Wasta. The closure is needed for crews to install temporary surfacing and guardrail in preparation for two-way traffic on I-90. Two-way traffic through this area is expected to begin on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. During the first phase of construction, two-way traffic will be carried in the eastbound lanes of I-90. Motorists should be aware of workers and equipment adjacent to the work zone. The eastbound lane closure and two-way traffic are part of a project to reconstruct the eastbound and westbound I-90 bridges and approach slabs over Bull Creek. The westbound bridge is scheduled to be constructed in 2025 followed by the eastbound bridge in 2026. The prime contractor on the $15 million project is Heavy Constructors, Inc. from Rapid City, SD. The interim completion date for the first phase of work on the westbound bridge is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The overall project completion date is August 2026. • Did you know? The intercity bus service, provided by Jefferson Lines, is long-distance public transportation that carries passengers over significant distances by connecting South Dakota cities (listed below) and numerous out-of-state locations: Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Unlike traditional public transit, which has frequent stops, intercity bus service generally has a single stop in a city or town. River Cities Public Transit, People’s Transit of Huron, Aberdeen Ride Line, and Standing Rock Public Transit are rural feeders to the main Jefferson Lines services operating on the I-90 and I-29 corridors. The current intercity bus network, including the rural intercity feeders, serves most of South Dakota’s population. Approximately 67% of the population in South Dakota is within 10 miles of an intercity bus stop. An even greater amount, 85%, are within 25 miles of an intercity bus stop in South Dakota. You can learn more about public transit providers, and the services they offer, by using the provider network interactive map on the SDDOT website at https://lnkd.in/gAvCkmrA. #SDDOT #SD511

  • The South Dakota Transportation Commission awarded 17 preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement Bridge Improvement Grants (BIG) totaling approximately $16.6 million at the recent commission meeting held in Pierre. The goal of the grant process is to enhance the overall condition of critical assets that South Dakotans are dependent upon each and every day. These structures provide the link that drives the interconnectedness of the state’s overall transportation system while enhancing statewide economic development overall. “Today the South Dakota Transportation Commission reinforced their commitment to improving the efficiency, safety, and access of the transportation system throughout our state,” said Joel Jundt, Secretary of Transportation. “The BIG program continues to be vital for the necessary preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement of local government structures, and the SDDOT commends the Transportation Commission for their continued commitment to provide state funding for this critical local government program.” For a full list of BIG recipients and additional information about the project, please read the press release at https://lnkd.in/guXrK9CD. • The newest named plow in the Watertown Area will be using "the force" to clear the highways of northeast South Dakota! "Hans Snowlo" was the name submitted by Cruz Russell from Watertown. Cruz and his family were recently able to meet "Hans Snowlo" and learn about winter maintenance and the work of our SDDOT plow operators. Craig Christeson, Watertown Area Lead Highway Maintenance Worker, provided Cruz a first-hand look at all of the advanced operational components of a snowplow. “I enjoyed showing Cruz the truck with all its technology and computers that we use to operate this piece of equipment. He was all smiles sitting in the big rig! It is a great opportunity for the public to have a chance to see a plow up close, “ said Craig. Pictured is Cruz, his father Brad Russell, and his grandmother, Wendy Russell with members of the SDDOT maintenance crew in Watertown. Additional information, including the names of those who provided the SDDOT winning submission by area, is available on the SDDOT contest website at https://lnkd.in/gPnuypPX. Photos and local stories will continually be added to the SDDOT contest page. #SDDOT #SD511

  • Because of their size and weight, trains can’t stop quickly. Use caution at all railroad crossings - wait to cross, always look both ways before crossing, and follow the signs and signals. We're counting on you to stop track tragedies by staying alert and making smart decisions when around or crossing railroad tracks. Chris noted about his visit, "Thank you and all of your guys for an awesome time! It was a learning experience and so many cool things to see. your guys are the absolute best at what they do!" Additional information, including the names of those who provided the SDDOT winning submission by area, is available on the SDDOT contest website at https://lnkd.in/gPnuypPX.
