Why Zoomie is called Zoomie! This bison, which is now no longer a little calf, was rescued from a bison meat ranch operation. She will soon be joining the SPLT's conservation herd on the Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve and live in the wild. This is Zoomie. A bison calf that was born on a bison meat ranch operation in North Dakota. However, Zoomie's story is a story of hope: This little female bison appeared on a neighbors' porch as a newborn one day in April 2023. The meat ranch didn't loose any mother bison, so most likely, the mom had twins and abandoned one calf. Zoomie decided to walk to the nearest house and find a new home. The neighbors offered this little girl a bottle, which she took, and she basically lived on their porch from that day out. Zoomie is now big and strong, and needs to be part of a herd. She will soon be joining the bison at Southern Plains Land Trust's preserve! SPLT supporter Jerome knows how to throw a party! One year he came up with a clever way to raise funds to “buy an acre” of prairie grasslands — a Superb Owl party! It started with a pot of veggie chili, snacks, and drinks. Next, he invited friends to join him for Superbowl Sunday. Along with a suggested donation of $20 per person, guests brought sides or drinks to share, and extra cash for games and the football pool. Over 30 guests celebrated this first annual Superb Owl together and raised over $1,200 protecting almost 3 acres of prairie grasslands. (Currently, an acre of prairie grassland in our location costs approximately $600.) We are sharing this idea to encourage all SPLT and prairie grassland supporters to host a Superb Owl Party on February 9th this year! Imagine parties all over Colorado and beyond — folks gathering to be together and to make a difference in preserving native habitats for plants and wildlife. A simple, fun idea that’s a “win-win.” Whether you’re a football fan, an owl fan, or both — consider hosting a Superb Owl Party. Put your own spin on this party idea!
