A16z confirmed a thesis that we’ve now held for a few years: AI will eat RPA companies for breakfast. RPA companies now have only two options; either become an AI automation company. Or get disrupted. For years, RPA (Robotic Process Automation) made waves by scripting repetitive tasks, providing value but stopping short of true autonomy. These "bots" might’ve looked like automation, but in reality, they merely mimicked keystrokes and clicks in rigid processes. When processes shifted, bots faltered. Complex implementations required costly consultants, limiting RPA to only the medium to large enterprises. With Generative AI, we’re now on the verge of fulfilling the real promise of automation. Enter Intelligent Automation – powered by AI agents that adapt, think, and operate with minimal human intervention. This isn’t about mere task mimicking; this is about AI-driven systems handling everything from complex data extraction to nuanced decision-making across industries. Here is how Gen AI agentic automation has an edge over RPA: 1. Flexibility: AI agents don’t just follow steps – they’re goal-oriented, adaptable, and learn from data, enabling dynamic automation that scales. 2. Cost-Effectiveness: With AI, automation is cheaper, faster, and accessible for businesses of all sizes, democratizing process efficiency. 3. Comprehensive Solutions: AI agents can act within diverse data sources and manage the end-to-end flow, reducing the need for siloed, custom integrations. With this shift, there’s a massive greenfield opportunity in intelligent automation for startups to capture the market left wide open by RPA’s limitations. Unlike legacy RPA players bound to "bots," the new era demands agents that integrate deeply into workflows, transforming pen-and-paper or spreadsheet-reliant processes into streamlined, intelligent systems. The future of automating is shifting rapidly – and AI is leading it. For an RPA company, the writing is on the wall. Evolve into an intelligent automation powerhouse, or prepare to be left behind. "We don’t program AI, we grow it." In the words of Dario Amodei from Anthropic, building AI Large Language Models (LLMs) is less about dictating instructions and more about cultivating something alive. AI is not merely coded—it evolves. Much like biology, where complex systems grow organically: + We create the scaffold. + We shine the light. + But the system itself grows. Here’s where it gets mind-blowing: by observing neural networks closely, researchers discovered that every AI develops universal features, mirroring patterns found in biological brains. The same patterns repeat across species and technologies like: → AI vision models → Monkey brains → Human neural networks Nature, it turns out, keeps reinventing similar solutions across vastly different forms. It is a pattern. Why should this matter to us? Because it shakes up the very core of what we thought we knew about intelligence and creation. AI technology isn’t just built; it’s born. We’re witnessing the birth of a new form of intelligence, one that echoes the deepest patterns of life itself. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #NeuralNetworks #Evolution #Biology #TechInnovation #FutureOfAI #DeepLearning #Anthropic #LexFridman #Intelligence #Nature

[Rare] Steve Jobs shares a simple concept: adapt the technology to the way people do things rather than adopt people to the way the computer does things. Steve’s words have been prophetic beyond his living years. A seemingly simple principle, yet one that’s profoundly difficult to achieve—and in our AI-driven world, it is becoming possible. Today, AI is empowering us to communicate with technology in plain English. No more convoluted commands or code barriers. But here’s the twist: making technology simpler for us requires building a far more sophisticated system behind the scenes. The future of AI is not about “just” predicting the next word or task. It's about creating an experience where technology feels like a natural extension of our everyday lives. The computer must adapt to us—not the other way around. Let’s build for people, not machines.

Having Great Distribution > Having Great Product. Having great distribution is way more important than having a great product. Look at this chart for a moment. Microsoft Teams skyrocketed in daily active users, leaving Slack—arguably the more beloved product by early adopters—far behind. Let's be clear: having a good product matters. But a great product without great distribution? It’s like having the world’s best-kept secret. It doesn't scale revenue. Microsoft leveraged its massive distribution channels, integrating Teams into existing Office 365 subscriptions, making it seamlessly available for millions of users. Slack, for all its product excellence, didn’t have the same advantage. Despite Salesforce acquisition. The result? Microsoft Teams didn’t just compete; it dominated. Too often, businesses fall into the trap of focusing solely on building the "perfect" product. But the truth is: distribution beats product. So, if you're building the next "big thing," think not only about what you're building but about how you’re going to get it into the hands of the masses. Because even a "good" product with great distribution will win over a "great" product that no one can access. What are your thoughts on distribution vs product? #ProductStrategy #Distribution #MicrosoftTeams #Slack #BusinessGrowth

This Time is Different. Or Maybe Not? p.s. there are two companies in the 2000 chart that are no longer in operation. And three companies that are on the slow path to extinction. The "Magnificent 7" vs the 2000 tech bubble leaders is a fascinating comparison. Yes, Mag 7 companies are far more robust than their early 2000s counterparts – better profit margins, healthier valuations, and a solid cash base. But let’s not get too complacent about them. Here’s where today’s leaders stand out: 1. Stronger Foundations: Unlike the speculative frenzy of 2000, the Mag 7 are not just riding on hype. They’ve built real revenue streams, have massive customer bases, and are ingrained into the fabric of our daily lives and economies. Profit margins sit at 28% compared to the 16% back then, showing these businesses are not just growth machines but cash-generating powerhouses. 2. Realistic Valuations, Relatively Speaking: The 24-month forward P/E for these companies is 23.9x, a significant drop from the wild 52x seen in 2000. It suggests more maturity in the market – investors are (hopefully) valuing fundamentals over pure speculation. However, in a world where a rapid AI development could disrupt even the largest players, no one is safe from potential market shifts. 3. The AI Hype Cycle ⚠️ : And yet, here’s where we need to keep our guard up. With AI, we’re seeing a hype cycle that *feels* reminiscent of the dot-com era. Every company is racing to claim their stake in the AI landscape, but how many will actually drive sustainable value? And will there be long term sustainable demand? Or will there be a 'trough of disillusionment' before broader industry adoption? The bottomline is that the Magnificent 7 may be more resilient than the companies from the 2000 bubble, but the risk due to AI hype cycle remains. Let’s learn from history, not just repeat it. #TechBubble #AIHype #MarketTrends #Magnificent7 #InvestingWisdom (the title for this post is loosely based on a book by Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff 'This Time Is Different that compares eight centuries of financial crises leading up to the 2008 Great Recession).

Anthropic's Claude can now control your computer. That's right, AI can now use computers just like humans. Let that sink in. For years, we’ve seen AI revolutionize industries by leveraging logical reasoning, interpreting images, and handling data in ways that transformed workflows. Now with Claude 3.5 Sonnet, we're witnessing something fundamentally different—AI can move beyond custom interfaces and directly interact with software like a human would, clicking, typing, and performing tasks based on screenshots. This is a major milestone. Think about it: most of modern work happens on computers. Yet, until now, AI has been constrained to specialized tools and APIs. The ability for AI to step into our existing digital workflows and emulate human interaction with software opens the door to a future where AI can perform a wider range of tasks, much like a real assistant. This changes everything. (I'm not even going to bring up RPA tools in this conversation). It is not perfect yet, but the trajectory is unmistakable. The real question is—are you ready for an AI that can work like you? #AI #Claude3.5 #ArtificialIntelligence #AITransformation #FutureOfWork #GenerativeAI
