  • Does a painter know photography or graphic design? Do hair stylists practice makeup and wardrobe? Does a singer learn acoustics? What complementary skills help your craft? Location sound recording is a skillset proven to be a huge benefit for post mixing. Post production mixers typically sit in acoustically pleasant rooms, and being on the production side of the fence teaches skills which carry straight through to the final mix. Why are particular microphones used? Why is ‘room tone’ recorded?  (is room tone recorded)? Why do you need a boom microphone AND a lavalier mic? Why should the refrigerator be turned off? Why should you record wild lines immediately after a take? Understanding the “whys” will serve the mixing process well and inform us to make better mix (and edit & sound design) decisions.  Additionally, building a relationship with the location sound crew has benefits while things are being captured. Being on the production crew of any project capturing (one of) the very important pieces of the content puzzle you suddenly realize the answer to all the “why’s.”

  • RECENT WORK: We’ve had the honor and thrill of mixing content for HHMI Tangled Bank Studios on Wild Hope season 2. These short pieces have all the elements, and a wide variety, for some very cool sound design and mixing. Whether above or below the waterline (we LOVE underwater sound design) there’s ample amounts of creativity happening, who can resist some underwater movement and feeding Manatees! All of which ends up being the literal landscape the viewer hears. Here’s a good example with “Return of the Manatees” from Wild Hope, check this (and more) out on PBS Nature. https://lnkd.in/eEkiXsYM

  • RECENT WORK: At Spinn Creative, we hold a profound appreciation for the role of sound in storytelling and brand establishment. Our seasoned team of sound designers is committed to meticulously crafting your project to resonate deeply with your audience. From the inception of signature sounds to the curation of indelible sonic identities, we love to elevate your brand's presence amidst the noise of today's world. https://lnkd.in/eUCefA9K

  • Animated projects always take a different approach from a sound perspective. Animation starts with zero sound, in other words: a literal blank canvas. This piece produced by Pendragwn Productions reveals the adventures of “Bob” in brilliant line sketch animation. Together with clever sound design, Bob has personality and even a voice. From whimsical sound effects to pointed accent cues, or maybe full sound build, the sky's the limit with animation...This was so much fun! https://lnkd.in/eVPS3qdk

  • RECENT WORK: Sound design is the critical and creative art of sculpting sonic landscapes that enhance storytelling. To evoke emotions, and captivate audiences or simply steer the viewer’s focus…or not. As powerful as a color grade or picture enhancement of something subtle in the frame, sound design will support and strengthen the “unnoticeable” element to support the story and make it noticeable. This PSA, produced by Lizzie Costello for the food service industry, and shot brilliantly in POV style, has all the sound design elements to tell the story needed. Only the dialog is from the original production - Try closing your eyes while you listen! It’s been long said that if we, as sound craft-people, do our job properly, then the viewer won’t notice anything at all. Taking it one-step further; When sounds are added to support the story, they become the story. vimeo.com/707971833

  • SHARING: In filmmaking, especially for series work, camera tests are crucial for pre-production visuals. However, often overlooked is the role of sound in that pre-pre production test. Post-production craftspeople each have their own workflow and method of (what we like to call) “turn-over triage” - in other words - how long will it take to get the audio timeline in shape for a proper edit & mix once it’s turned-over? Taking an early proactive approach to engage in these tests truly enhances efficiency by cultivating the collaboration with production sound, assistant editors, post supervisors and the entire audio department before it even gets in our hands. Recognizing the importance of thorough camera and audio testing directly influences post-mixing success. In essence, this meticulous approach ensures a seamless integration once the post-production clock officially starts and this can make or break a typical tight schedule if anything does not go as planned.
