It takes #APOPO around 9 months to a year to fully train a tuberculosis (TB) detection rat. These 'HeroRATs' learn to distinguish between TB-positive and TB-negative samples. The rats will only hear a click and receive a tasty food reward if they hold their nose over a TB-positive sample for 3 seconds. HeroRAT Lisa, receives a tasty mix of banana and avocado for correctly identifying a TB-positive sample.
