Simply showing up for a child who has come to understand they aren’t worth showing up for is powerful. These kids may have different caregivers, different homes, and people who said they’d be home for dinner but got arrested. By showing up, on time, reliably, over and over again, you start to rebuild an idea that people have integrity and most importantly they are worth showing up for. #mentorship #fostercare #adoption #MentoringAmplifies #MentoringMonth

Changing the trajectory for youth in foster care
About us
Our mission is to improve the life course of foster and adopted children who have experienced early developmental trauma. Children who have experienced early developmental trauma or family disruption often struggle with creating healthy attachments which can impact their ability to adapt to change, navigate peer relationships and social environments, achieve academic milestones and regulate their emotional and behavioral responses. Research has suggested that one of the most effective interventions for children surviving with trauma is a long-lasting, consistent relationship and reliable connection.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS funds a program aimed at providing services for young people who are aging out of the #fostercare system. States have the flexibility to decide what services to offer, which can include things like housing and employment assistance. For many years, states have returned millions of dollars to HHS—despite young people still needing these services. HHS officials plan to work with states to identify and address why funds were returned. But, HHS hasn't documented these plans. https://loom.ly/zo81QSs

For four in 10 youth who are placed in congregate care, Julia Stumler cites, there is no clinical need for them to live in a group facility. And “research consistently shows that children fare best in families, not facilities.” Prioritizing kinship care and independent living pathways over congregate care, she said, “is essential to support the needs of young people.” #fostercare #childwelfare #fostercarepolicy https://lnkd.in/dWh6ZuzW

Nikita Cooper was nine when she went into care, staying with 10 different families, of which only two were black. "A lot of foster parents didn't understand my cultural needs like hair, skincare, certain foods that I eat... that was really hard," she said. #fostercare #mentorship https://loom.ly/CT6WE_Y

Experts say the opportunity for abuse against children goes up during the holidays and there are a number of reasons for it. Family, finances or other issues may trigger stress. Parties and events may trigger a rise in alcohol consumption. Children are also off from school and home for extended periods. #childabuse #fostercare https://loom.ly/FzM-BLM
