metadata, data movement, and orchestration for files and objects

About us

Starfish is the unstructured data management platform for high performance computing (HPC), AI/ML, and other demanding file-based workloads. Starfish provides a unified index and a common API for addressing, managing, and moving files across a diversity of file storage systems, including HPC file systems, scale-out NAS, conventional file servers, and S3-style object stores. Starfish is vendor-agnostic, supporting devices and services from all hardware, software, and cloud vendors. Common use cases include data classification, protection, archiving, migration, ROT cleanup, cost accounting, and workflow automation. Starfish supports such a wide variety of use cases due to its super-flexible architecture that combines a metadata-rich catalog with a scale-out data mover and batch processor. The feedback loop between the catalog and the batch processor enables automated data classification, metadata-driven storage management policies, user self-service, and file-processing workflows. Are you going to Supercomputing in Atlanta? The PetaFLOP is back and bigger than ever. It's the most awesome post-conference party. . . despite having "FLOP" in its name. The theme this year is: Field of Blues -- Build it and they will Compute If you think that is a clever name, give us a LIKE using the blue thumbs up 👍 . If you get the pun and think it's a REALLY clever name, give us a LIKE with the yellow lightbulb 💡 .

Ensuring data security and compliance at scale is no easy feat. Our final surprising Starfish capability? Comprehensive permissions auditing for massive storage environments!   With Starfish, you can simply define "blessed" permission settings that align with your security policies. Then let Starfish seamlessly scan across your entire multi-petabyte storage footprint to identify any files or directories with risky world-writable, overly permissive group, or incorrect ownership settings.   But it gets better - you can configure Starfish to automatically fix those insecure permissions by applying your blessed values in bulk! No more wasting days or weeks manually updating permissions one filesystem at a time.   By proactively auditing and locking down insecure permissions at scale, this feature helps you stay compliant with regulations like HIPAA and prevents accidental data exposure incidents. It's a must-have for any enterprise managing massive unstructured data estates.   Explore this and 20 other #SurprisingThings about Starfish here: [bit.ly/3yd4VaK]   #DataSecurity #DataCompliance #AutomateAllTheThings #PermissionsAuditing #DataOps #21SurprisingThings

This week we’re highlighting Starfish's powerful inter-organizational data sharing capabilities! In today's collaborative research landscape, seamless dataset sharing across institutions is crucial. Starfish streamlines this process with automated file transfers to shared repositories and data archives using Starfish-provided or partner-provided tools like @Globus.org.   Key benefits:    ✔️ Configurable policies for automatic data transfers  ✔️ Seamless multi-site collaborations  ✔️ Adherence to data preservation and open access requirements  ✔️ Reduced friction in multi-institutional projects  ✔️ Automatic metadata propagation for proper interpretation and reuse  ✔️ Compliance with institutional policies and funding body requirements   Starfish simplifies data deposits into institutional repositories and preservation archives. Define policies based on project, file type, age, etc., and Starfish systematically packages and delivers your valuable data to the designated environment with all relevant metadata included.   Say goodbye to manual data management busywork and focus on your core research activities!   Learn more: [bit.ly/3SYGSnq] #DataPreservation #OpenScience #21SurprisingThings #FAIR

How much is unchecked filesystem churn costing your organization? Whether it's wasted storage from inefficient usage patterns or the risk of data loss from corruption incidents, the impacts can be significant. Fortunately, Starfish provides an elegant solution for churn monitoring. By maintaining a real-time record of all file creations, deletions and modifications, Starfish ensures you have an immutable audit trail to analyze root causes. Combined with its powerful query engine, you can quickly pinpoint problem areas and identify optimization opportunities. Gain true storage intelligence and take control of your environment. Still relying on decades-old protocols like NDMP for backup and recovery? The future of data protection lies in streamlined, file-based approaches...which just so happens to be this week's #21SurprisingThings reveal from Starfish! By operating at the file level, Starfish obliterates the need for NDMP and its complexities. Capture point-in-time data snapshots, maintain complete version histories, and restore individual files or entire datasets with ease. No fussy protocols, no cross-system compatibility issues - just pure data protection prowess. It's time to evolve beyond NDMP. See how Starfish is ushering in the modern era of backup: [https://bit.ly/3SYGSnq] #DataRecovery #ByeNDMP #FileBackup #VersionedBackups

Struggling to keep up with demanding HPC and AI workloads using just your on-premises resources? Then let Starfish Storage show you the way to infinite compute with our automated cloud bursting capabilities! As part of our #21SurprisingThings" campaign, we're showcasing how Starfish enables you to dynamically move data and workloads between your on-prem environment and cloud resources based on real-time demands. With our intelligent policy engine, you can associate specific datasets with cloud bursting rules based on rich metadata. When your clusters are maxed out, Starfish will automatically transfer just the files needed to your designated cloud for temporary scaling. Once the cloud job is done, the data is brought back to your on-prem environment. It's that simple! This seamless hybrid cloud model gives you the ability to scale compute resources up or down instantly while optimizing resource utilization and costs. No more over-provisioning, no more bottlenecks - just infinite cloud scalability at your fingertips! Curious to learn about the other 20 Surprising Things?
