  • Happy Earth Day, Stargazers!🌟 Today, as we celebrate our incredible planet, let's also take a moment to appreciate the vastness of this cosmos and the uniqueness of our Blue Planet! Did you know that Earth's orbit around the Sun isn't a perfect circle? 🌍 It's actually an ellipse, which means our distance from the Sun varies throughout the year, which then influences how we experience the seasons. 🌞 Earth is also the only planet NOT named after a Greek or Roman god. The name "Earth" is derived from Old English and Germanic words meaning "ground" or "soil." It's a unique name that reflects the planet's solid surface and its importance as the home for living organisms. Not the smallest, not the biggest, and just one planet in our vast universe, she is our home so let us celebrate Mother Earth and marvel at the cosmic dance that keeps our planet teeming with life and wonder! 🌌 #HappyEarthDay #EarthDay #Biodiversity #environment #protectearth

  • It’s here! Make time today to check out the #eclipse or you’ll have to wait another 20 years! 👀But remember that it’s important to prioritize eye safety. When watching a partial or total solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you should look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. 1. Never look directly at the sun. 2. Use special eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods to protect your precious eyes. 3. Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays can burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury. 4. Stay safe and enjoy the show!  Experts warn against viewing the eclipse through a phone camera. The sun's bright rays can also damage a phone's digital components. So if you don’t have #eclipse glasses, here are a couple other safe hacks to use: 1. Poke a hole through a piece of cardstock or cardboard, hold it up during the eclipse and look down to see a partial crescent projected below. Holding up a colander or a cracker will produce a similar effect. 2. Another trick: Peering at the ground under a shady tree can yield crescent shadows as the sunlight filters through branches and leaves. #SolarEclipseSafety #EyeProtection #CosmicAdventure #solareclipse #eclipse  #sun #newmoon  #solar #solarsystem  #supermoon  #space

  • 4:28 Four minutes and 28 seconds is the longest period of totality those in Torreón, Mexico will have to see the #solareclipse on Monday… And the rest of us only have 4 minutes max! So while it’s not much time and we’d have to wait another 20 years to see this celestial phenomena, that isn't stopping the science department at North Texas’ Grapevine-Colleyville ISD from preparing students to not just safely see it, but truly understand the science behind it. Take Britt McDougal, who teaches at Timberline Elementary School in Grapevine, who is using our very own StarLab to immerse students in an intergalactic learning adventure in preparation for the eclipse. With StarLab, students are seeing the positioning of the planets, including Earth, up close and how the orbit and alignment of the sun and moon will be on #eclipseday. More importantly, this interactive learning experience is helping students raise questions, make observations, and more deeply engage in the study of our solar system… 🚀 Kind of like a ‘rocket ship zooming us through the solar system, taking the far, far away and bringing it within arm’s reach!’ See what else students are saying about their #StarLab experience here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/enGu6Qvy

  • ❓Did you know… The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous United States won't happen again until 2045! In fact, the last one occurred August 21, 2017 and before that one, you’d have to go back to February 26, 1979. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on our planet. 🌑☀️ One of the cool things about it is that everyone in the continental U.S. will see at least a partial eclipse. If you have clear skies on eclipse day, the Moon will cover at least 16% of the Sun’s surface, and that’s from Neah Bay at the northwestern tip of Washington. 😎If you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse. You can check out where you are relative to each using NASA’s Eclipse Explorer: https://lnkd.in/gzgPrxUs Tell us ⬇️…from where will you be viewing the #solareclipse? #SolarEclipseFacts #SpaceExplorers #ScienceNerds #solareclipse #eclipse  #sun #newmoon  #solar #solarsystem  #supermoon  #space
