Check out this interesting blog post by Microsoft about their new "Zero Water" design!
New Microsoft Sites Embrace "Zero Water" Design - Microsoft says its new data centers will use a closed-loop cooling system that requires no fresh water, shifting away from evaporative cooling designs. "New projects in Phoenix, Arizona, and Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin, will pilot zero-water evaporated designs in 2026," Microsoft said. " Starting August 2024, all new Microsoft datacenter designs began using this next-generation cooling technology, as we work to make zero-water evaporation the primary cooling method across our owned portfolio. These new sites will begin coming online in late 2027." High- density is part of the solution. Microsoft said that in adopting chip-level cooling solutions, it can deliver precise temperature control without evaporation. While water is still used for restrooms and kitchens, the new design will avoid the need for more than 125 million liters of water per year per datacenter, the company said.
