Government red tape is getting in the way of entrepreneurs’ ability to compete, said Mark Alford, detailing his efforts in Washington, D.C. to ensure affordable, equitable access to and use of “digital technologies” — especially when the federal government is involved, he added. “Small businesses are the fabric of America, driving innovation and growth,” said U.S. Rep. Alford, R- Missouri, introducing a bill this week that would clarify Small Business Administration rules to allow SBA 7(a) loan funds to be used for digital tools and services.

A Lenexa-based tech company focused on accelerating skills for avid golfers hit a funding milestone this week, announcing a seed round meant to bridge the gap between on-course and off-course play through its innovative physical and digital solutions. Albatross Golf — which boasts two flagship offerings: GolfTRK and Noonan — on Tuesday shared news of its $675,000 funding infusion, fueled in large part by the Kansas Angel Investor Tax Credit (KAITC) program. The statewide initiative incentivizes investments in Kansas startups by giving investors 50 percent of their investment back as Kansas tax credits.

Lenexa Public Market will soon be home to a new kitchen serving a mix of authentic flavors from Laos and Thailand — an authentic-to-home concept from an entrepreneur known for bringing fresh culinary experiences to diners from North Kansas City to South Johnson County. Chef and owner Adison Sichampanakhone plans a January opening for Saap Saap Noodles, he said, noting Saap Saap translates to “good good” in Laotian.

Kansas City has an “enormous appetite” for outdoor dining, said Wes Rogers, highlighting the growing need for city leaders to be responsive to evolving industry and small business trends — and championing KCMO’s new outdoor dining grants program. Officials on Tuesday announced 20 inaugural recipients of the Outdoor Dining Enhancement Grant. It’s an initiative — developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath — meant to elevate small businesses by providing funding to upgrade dining spaces for year-round use — especially outdoors.

Gift cards are convenient — and the No. 1 most-requested present — Nicole Glass said, but there’s frequently just something impersonal and disconnected about them that makes many people feel bad about slipping one into a card or gift box. “It’s like, ‘I didn’t really know what you wanted. Here’s Starbucks,’” said Glass, president of Kansas City-based Gift Card Market. “We still love giving them, but it just doesn’t give you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside.” The U.S. gift card market doubled over the past decade, according to Statista, reflecting an industry that saw $91 billion sales in 2010 and $200 billion in 2023.

Stepping into Guevel is a little like peeking behind the scenes into Cameron Niederhauser’s own wardrobe, the designer said — at least when it comes to the menswear store’s in-house line. “We make a couple of shirts that are inspired by old, vintage pieces in my own closet,” the Guevel owner explained. “Our denim is basically built around my frame. My joke is always, if you wonder why a jean fits the way it does, just look at whoever designed it. Because they are probably starting with something they like and prefer, and that’s definitely true of our jeans. They fit how I want our jeans to fit."

The impact of shopping local from Kansas City makers — especially during the holiday season — can be distilled down to one simple word, said Katie Mabry van Dieren: joy. “The look on the faces of the makers when someone finds the most special gift to give their loved one — a gift that the maker spent their time and talent making — is why I love my job,” said Mabry van Dieren, founder of the Holiday Swing handmade holidays maker’s market, calling the true return on investment “immeasurable.” Click through for a roundup of holiday maker markets and pop-ups.
