just Historic Pub Crawls®in the National Press - Again! Three months ago I got this from a PR person: "I am quite expensive. But it takes a long time and I can't guarantee any results. After all, you are competing for eyeballs when there are other entrepreneurs that exist like Ben Francis and Stephen [sic] Barlett. However I would be fine charging you a day to run through a questionnaire with you to see if we can tease out a story that *might* be interesting" Since declining that generous offer.... I just watched a video that hit me hard. Eric Schmidt, former CEO, dropping truth bombs about founders. Here's the kicker: "The great founders are frugal." Schmidt says he cringes at startups with: - Beautiful offices - Really nice chairs - Fancy perks Why? Because true founders understand: Money is a tool, not a toy Resources are for growth, not comfort Success comes from sacrifice, not luxury The most successful? They often start with $0 salary. Tough pill to swallow? Maybe. But that's the founder's life. If you're not ready for it, you might not be ready to found. Are you willing to be frugal for your dream? Or do you need that ergonomic chair to "think big"? 🤷♂️ #VenchaVideosforFounders / Video # Zero Find us at Vencha 💛

I was once offered a spot 'volunteering' to be a 'mentor' at an AI Startup incubator to 'help increase my profile'. Same incubator takes 10% equity for things like registering your company and offers £10k of value in 'mentorship'. So if I wasn't paid where was the £10k going? Founders... don't be a lemming. #startups

Startup founders are “overworked”, “exhausted” and “broken” — and dozens of them are considering leaving their businesses in the next year. 😖 Sifted surveyed 156 founders about their mental health — and the results are pretty upsetting.   85% of founders told us they suffered from high stress last year, while 75% said they had anxiety. 45% told us they felt that their mental health was ‘bad’ or ‘very bad’ at the moment.   “I have been at extremely high levels of stress pretty much non-stop and I am tired and exhausted most of the time,” said one respondent.   “I’m not sure I can muster the energy to keep going,” said another.   Worryingly, they’re far from alone: 49% of founders said they’re considering quitting their startup this year.    “I cannot sustain this rhythm anymore. Solving problems seems the only purpose in my life and while doing it my mental and physical health is deteriorating,” one founder told us.    Another said: “My personal life suffering and cost of living/startup wages are not enough to support my family.” Several founders brought up “financial security” as a key reason for considering quitting for a “more stable job”.    The challenging fundraising environment, coming so shortly after the pandemic, coupled with investors’ focus on reaching profitability, is the number one reason founders are “broken”, our survey found.    But there are other concerns. Founders are worried about the toll it’s all having on their personal lives, with some telling us the stress had(or nearly) ended their marriage. That’s not surprising; 65% of founders told us they lean on their partner or spouse for support, while 64% also told us they’d started spending less time with friends and family over the past year. That’s a hard deal for any partner.    As for non-romantic partners, the strains of the current environment are also leading to cofounder break-ups. “I’m sick of arguing with my cofounder over the future,” said one respondent.    Not every founder, however, feels this way: 28% said if they left their current startup they’d want to start a new one.    But a far bigger group are considering leaving startup life for now. Of those wanting to depart their business, 39% said they’d take a break while 30% would look for a job.   For the investors among our readers, what do you think of these findings? For the founders’ partners out there, how tough has the last year been for you? And for the founders, my colleague Sadia Nowshin would like to hear more about how you’re feeling. If you’re happy to be interviewed by her (not anonymously, this time), please send her an email: sadia@sifted.eu https://lnkd.in/eMZi4HUM #founders #mentalhealth #vc #startups

Over the past few months I’ve been working on an idea based on my own struggles as a parent. I often get frustrated with the number of emails, texts, newsletters and apps schools and clubs use to communicate with me about what my kids are doing. So I’ve set out to create an app called Kiki which takes this hassle away and manages it all on my behalf, only telling what I need to know when I need to know it. I’m still in the early stages and am looking for parents of school-aged children to fill in a short survey (c. 10mins) to help me with my user research to make sure I can maximise value for all parents: https://lnkd.in/ec3PTQrV If you’re a parent, I would very much appreciate your input as well as your partners (if you have one) and all of your parent friends too 😀 I’m looking to get as much data as possible, especially from people I don’t know so I can ensure I build the right thing. If you aren’t a parent, then please still share this post and link with any parents you know to help me on my way! On Wednesday night I shared some sobering numbers at the MeetFounders event that I think every Startup founder needs to hear. I have raised from cold outreach, but it's important to understand the numbers so you are not entering a race with too many competitors. Because when you are applying to a fund, it is their job to spend time pouring over decks and models and researching sectors. And it's your job to grow a great business and build a fantastic team. I heard this at an event a few months ago 👇 One VC said they receive 9,000 decks to review a year... and they invest in 6 companies 🤯 It takes 6 mins to complete the 'submit a deck' form on their site. That's as long as Bohemian Rhapsody 🕺 *if* they spend the equivalent amount of time reviewing your deck it takes 👇 ⏱️ 54,000 minutes ⌛ 900 hours 🗓️ 112.5 full working days 😰 43.6% of an entire working year So what are the odds of gaining their investment? 1:1,500! Let's compare to these live odds... 👇 🧙 Daniel Radcliffe becomes the next Bond 1:200 🤖 Mark Zuckerberg becomes President of USA 1:200 🎤 UK wins the 2024 Eurovision Song contest 1:20 ⚽ Harry Kane wins BBC sports 'personality' of the year 1:150 Of course, it is possible to improve your odds. There is a 1:662,000 chance you will win a medal at the Olympics. 🏅 But this will decrease if you are getting up every morning to go and practice/run/train. 💪 But consider this... The day of the Olympic trials there are 8,999 other competitors. Even if none are as good, or have trained as hard, what happens if you just can't push your way past the volume of people? Or the Olympic selector is bored/tired/distracted/in a rush and can't properly assess all competitors 😭 It happens, we are all human. I promise, if I saw 9,000 decks, even some great ones would get just a cursory glance. My fault, their problem. There has to be a better way from both sides. 🤷🏻 Fundraising for your startup is a mentally exhausting process. Even if you are super relevant, how can you cut through the noise? Please 🙏 #vc jump on this thread and tell founders how they should approach you for the best chance of success. Let's help each other get better at this process. #venturecapital #startups #fundraising #entrepreneurs
